Points conversion.

On the '65, I'm looking at keeping the engine looking somewhat original. I want to stick with the original distributor and coil rather than going HEI like I did on my other trucks. Anyhow, I know Pertronix has a good conversion kit. Has anyone tried this one from Crane? Who has the best deals for these kits?

Can't comment on the Crane, but I'm using the Pertronix on the 292 I'm working on for the same reason. Electrically speaking, these are pretty simple devices, and Crane has other ignition boxes that would require crank triggers, so I doubt this is "outside" of their area of expertise. They're probably tired of Pertronix making all the $ on this need.

I ordered the Pertronix kit for my 235, it's all here and still in the boxes. I like it. It seems simple and will look stock... got mine off evilbay think I got about 155 in electronics module and new coil and wires....

my 1990 sub with a sbc tbfi had what I thought was the old style points/coil system , but my mechanic told me that it was a newer hei?
I will have to investigate and get a pic, because it looked like the old stuff.

Yeah, he's right. The TBI engines run HEI with and external coil. You can get them to work on an older engine, but you won't have any advance. On the newer distributors the advance in computer controlled.

As for the Crane setup, I did a little google search on them and they seem to have a lot of problems with the 'rev limiter' thats built in. I don't think I want to take that chance. I'll stick with the Pertronix.

I put one in my truck way back. And I can tell you after I put the Mallory HEI in it put the pertronix to shame. Still, you don't have to mess with points though.

I put the Crane conversion on a Nova. Worked like a champ untill I sold her. I did carry the old parts in the glove box just in case though.

I can't comment on their points conversion but my son did buy one of the Flamethrower HEI's. When we needed a replacement part for it (our mistake not warranty) they couldn't sell us the part....said they don't carry replacement parts So I doubt if I will buy any Pertronix products again. Just my experience, your experience may vary.

I am going to order one of these again. I had one with my last engine and I liked it. It has an ajustable vaccum advance and it even comes with extra springs for the machanical advance. Not a bad price if you factor in the $25 rebate.. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Mallo...3286.m14.l1318
