How much to powdercoat a frame?
Just like the topic says, how much have you paid or been quoted to have your frame blasted and powdercoated? I got an estimate today of $425. Wanted to see what kind of prices others were paying.
If anyone knows of a good place to get coating done around Tulsa, chime in. Thanks! matt |

Yeah, looking at how good some of the powdercoated frames look in the builds on this site makes me think I want to pay the extra money for a good foundation.

Re: How much to powdercoat a frame?
I have one of the Eastwood home kits and I have powdercoated a ton of small stuff. I have an electric oven in my garage just for that purpose. If I had the means I would probably powdercoat just about everything. I just dig the look of Powdercoat.

Re: How much to powdercoat a frame?
Did your quote include the sandblasting, too? It`s probably not a bad price.I pay $45 an hour for blasting.Personally,I would only powercoat a frame on a show truck.Me and my streetrod friends have had great results with TSC gloss black. It really hangs in there.I`ve been having parts powdercoated for years. It can still chip or wear through.Once that happens,if you don`t see it and seal it up,water gets under the finish and holds water bigtime. It`s a hardshell finish and it will stay while the steel beneath deteriorates.I`ve seen the front bar on a set of ladder racks still have the powdercoat all the way across the front surface. But,the top edge wore through and the 1 1/4" square tube had pits almost through the steel. If every component isn`t seperated the coating will crack at the union and that`s where the water gets in even if there is no other damage to the finish.
Just offering food for thought through my experiences.I wouldn`t say,"Don`t powdercat a frame".But,I suggest inspecting for breaks in the finish on occassion for safety sake.

Re: How much to powdercoat a frame?
I though aboutPC but remember some nerf bars I had on a truck. As soon as they chipped from gravel the rust creeped in.
My blaster charges $100 per hour and said my frame would be about $200 just to blast. I blasted it and put this stuff on www.nomorerust.com I used a foam brush and most people would swear that it's powdercoated. Goes on nice and levels out. Use the stuff with UV protectant though. It's a urethane paint that is tough as nails when used with the sealer... check out my build pics if you want to see... I invested 1.5 quarts of each to do my frame, leaf spring, axles and crossmembers with two coats. I would get the AG111 Kit for $65

Re: How much to powdercoat a frame?
Thanks for the reply guys. I hadn't considered the frame rusting underneath the coating. This is gonna be my driver, so I'll probably just go with POR-15 or the AG111 kit.
Mike, I did check out your build pics, actually read the whole build from start to present...looks real nice! I keep fighting with my wire wheel, too and so far it's wire wheel 3, Matt 0. Must build aviators tougher than MPs. |

Re: How much to powdercoat a frame?
It's been about two years but I paid $450 for the frame, front crossmember and trailing arms. That was blasting and powder coating, I already had them cleaned up alot.

Re: How much to powdercoat a frame?
I don't know...you MP's carry a lot of weapons...maybe that's to make up for the lack of toughness! just kiddin.
Thanks for the comments. The PM series stuff is pretty darn tough. Of course my truck hasn't left the garage yet but for the price I think it's the way to go. I used the chassis paint and sealant. It's very glossy so go for the AG111 satin. Be sure to still get your frame blasted or take on your wire wheel again. The sealant likes etched metal to grab on to. sdailey used it as well... I jsut added pics of my cab... epoxy primed and rust free, still floor free too....

Re: How much to powdercoat a frame?
I paid around $380 for the frame and crossmember for blasting and powdercoating. Looks much better than por15 IMO. I am also going to have my inner fenders and radiator support done so they match.
