6.5L Diesel?
What is the reliability of this engine for this year? I seem to remember hearing not to good things of the 6.5 this old.
Found and '82 GMC pretty cheap - need buying recommendation. thanks, Phil |

Sorry guys - I meant the 6.2L Diesel. I've been reading about the injector pump problems online. Wonder if this should keep me from buying. thanks, Phil |

Early 6.2 diesel engines did have problems.
The injector pump i wouldn't worry about. The 6.2 Had a problem with cracking on the # 4 and 5 main journal and causing oil pressure problems. But hey if it's cheap enough I would buy it and drive till something goes wrong. You can always put a small block in it. That's easy. |

I've owned one (82 6.2L) for the past 5 years and never had a problem. Until I changed my fuel filter. Oh man. But it's a beaut and it's still going.

And remember, if it's a diesel from the factory, that means no emissions testing when you put a gas engine in it!

Thanks for the advice, guys.
Since my post, I have bought a great 1982 GMC with 6.2L diesel, and found a great resource on the 'net: www.62-65-dieselpage.com Regards, Phil |

Ditch the diesel for a gas job. I would worry about the injector pump. There's a plastic gear in there that wheres out very quickly and plugs the return line to the engine, the truck slowly dies until you can't go over 15mph... time to fix. Also, in my opinion, the 6.5 sucks just as much. A few more cubes but still has the same problems as 6.2, don't know why they thought throwing a turbo charger on would solve anything. Don't get me wrong, the 6.2 is a torquey engine and fun while it lasts but that isn't going to be trouble free by any means.
