I`m sure this shifter is original to the Blazer and it`s a 350/TH350/NP205.I`d guess it`s as much of a "trial" design as much as a "grab what`s available" part.GM was prolly experimenting with a more convenient/driver-friendly shifter position and realized that one design for all worked best overall.Maybe testes found this shifter to be a "knee-knocker" as stated by our own K/5 R&D spokesperson.
It looks like GM tried a few designs and landed on the straight up and back shifter.I also have a`70 4spd/205 combo with the shifter straight up and bent real hard to the back.I believe it was bent by a previous owner.It`s a black one and I can see where the material was stretched/shrunk.
