Re: Points vs HEI 1969 C/10
No question, HEI! If she's running OK now, shop around and get you a good deal. About every three years change the plugs, wires every six, just drive and smile!

Re: Points vs HEI 1969 C/10
Ok your block is a 302,327 or 350
Heads are 75 to 86 350/400 heads with 76 cc combustion chambers there are 3 different valve sizes you could have in these. I doubt it is a 302 so that leaves a 327 or 350. Based on the size of the dampener I'd guess at a 327. So if you have a 327 with large chamber heads, that thing should run on the crappiest gas you could put in it!
What does the portion of this comment mean that I highlighted. Can you explain a little more. Is this good or bad. Well, all in all, I think the HEI is a huge improvement over points. I have a junkyard unit that I suspect is not running all that well. I will save and get a better unit, but I do see a noticeable difference. I take it no one has experience with the part of my comment about the engine running better with the vac adv. disconnected? |

Re: Points vs HEI 1969 C/10
Its good for gas. When you put the large chamber heads on the older engines it lowers the compression ratio a little. I'll research just how much. If it runs better with the advance disconnected are you sure it is working? You can check it with a timing light. At idle with the vacuum disconnected it should be set at about 8 to 10 degrees advance (BTDC). When you plug in the vacuum advance it should pull it up a few more. Oh and the small vibration dampener is what makes me think you have a 327 block.

Re: Points vs HEI 1969 C/10
yeah.. thanks. I wondering and starting to think it is 327. Did they put them in 69 c/10's though?
I do not have a timing light but I cannot remember if the engine speeds up or down when connected. A friend said that it's doing the opposite of what it's supposed to do? so. I am not good at this tuning stuff so trying to learn so I can save a buck with these guys. Need to invest in timing light.. and maybe even another dist from the yard. |

That wire should be only about 9 volts to the old coil through that resistor wire. You can use a volt ohm meter to measure the voltage at the coil end of the wire.
The HEI has to have a solid 12 volts to operate right.

Re: Points vs HEI 1969 C/10
That could be why she's stuttering a little when I get on it. It comes out of it though, kind of weired. It's like it a gear or shift within the distb. or something. When it does ger to the point, it kicks into another gear and goes. Happens very early, but does catch up enough to get a good. Could be a carb adjustment too. I did not change anything there. I would think you almost have to right? It fired righ up and held an idle so I did not touch anything.
One more thing I forgot to mention, I was reading up on the recommended gap for the plugs when doing this swap on the site and what seemed to be the consensus .035 or .45 on the gap. Mine were again not touched at .35. Should I open them up. Seems like the Quad is a little late opening up now too. The timing was not set by timing light. I'm kinf of just mentioning things thing is case someone can help diagnose. Last edited by Slik69; 09-30-2008 at 05:49 PM. |
