im stumped
last night i started my truck and for 10 seconds it ran fine but after it started to slow rpm drop till it died. i tried starting it again and even after holding the pedal to the floor it wouldnt start. i let it sit for about half an hour, tried again and it barely started with the pedal floored and i had to keep my foot on the pedal or it would die and it ran horribly. this morning i started it and the same thing. first thing i checked was the coil (i had problems with it a few months back) when i pulled the wires for the 7 and 2 cylinder they had a green powder on them and a dull color, the rest where shiney and clean. i cleaned them up a bit and now the engine runs fine, but im not sure this would cause the problems i had.

Re: im stumped
My guess would be the float in the carb

Re: im stumped
Could also be clogged filters. My 68 had been running smooth as a swiss clock until day before yesterday. I was going down the road and all of a sudden the sucker acted as if it was out of gas (I had just filled it up).
Stomp on the gas and nothing! I let it coast to a stop and it fired up again. First thing I suspected was clogged filters or carb. I checked the carb filter and it was fairly clean. I have a metal filter under the cab between the tank and fuel pump. But I didn't have a way to bypass that one. I found that if I ran it a very low speed- about 10-15 mph- I could go for about a mile or two before dying on me... Took me 30 minutes to go 10 miles... Long story short, the metal filter was plugged up pretty bad and just letting gas trickle to the carb. |

Re: im stumped
all of those seem to be liable to cause a problem I was having the same issue a few months ago. Turned out I was getting a lot of junk out of the tank clogging the in-line fuel filter, fixed that issue and had a carb problem. floats were sticking, i believe there was a piece of gunk stuck in between the needle and seat as well...
