Post Removing tailgate components-- how hard?

I am going to buy an 89 (looks like 73-87 model) 1 ton crew cab, but the tailgate is in very poor condition. I was thinking about buying a tailgate shell and transferring all the latches, handle, and so forth from the old tailgate, but I've never done this. Is it fairly easy and straightforward or not? Any input is appreciated!

j-dogg,

Removing the tailgate pieces is easy. The bottom hindges are just bolts. The latches on the side are also bolted. The problems is the latch itself. You have to use a good big screw driver to remove it. The screws are not easy to remove. If you lucky it has bolts but more than likely it has big screws. One you remove the latch the long rods need to be popped out of the latch. One the rods are loose the side hinges come out. Once the rods are removed you need to replace the little plastic that holds the rods inplace on the latch. You can buy those for $0.50 at the dealer. Replace them or the rods can fall out. If they fall out then you have to fight the tailgate side latches to open it. Have some WD 40 handy. Paint the parts before installing them too. Helps cut down the rust.
