Key tumbler/column problem

yeah, so, I was stranded at work yesterday. I had noticed that my ignition tumbler was slowing going south. It required frequent wiggling, cussing, and holding my tongue just right. Well, I switched out the tumbler and it's better, but still not right, what's the problem. Every once in the while, I turned it and hear a "ting" sound. It's a little chunky sometimes, and sometimes I have to turn it back and forth a couple times to make it work.

Any suggestions appreciated. It's an '86 with standard, non-tilt column.

Maybe the ignition switch down towards the bottom of the column.

yeah, I ordered a new one from GM, but they sent me the wrong one. I blew the head gasket or cracked a head a week later. I put the new tumbler in and was going to just slide the switch upward a little with the slack provided. just didn't get to it, and now I'm converting to a auto tilt column
