engine location

What are the pros and cons(and reasoning) of having the engine in the forward motor mount location vs. rear? Being bagged, any reason for one over the other? Do people have issues with an HEI hitting the firewall?

Re: engine location

If I remember correctly, the V8's came in the front holes from the factory and the I-6's came in the rear holes.

I'v heard the factory moved the V8 further forward due to handling & brake bias differences caused by the engine being heavier.

Re: engine location

I moved my engine as far back as possible & made my own holes

It was a lot more work, but it balances the trucks weight out more
I also had to put a high hump in it for the trans to fit

Re: engine location

They look better moved back i think, then they dont have that big gap between the distributor and firewall

Re: engine location

I moved mine back and lowered the front mounts slightly to give me more firewall/distributor clearance. I just think it looks better in the rear position.

Re: engine location

Most of the 60-66's I see have the engine mounted in the rear position which I believe is factory for these years. I pulled mine forward for easier distributor clearance and if you drop a beer it will fall all the way to the floor!! I was changing to an aftermarket trans x-member at the same time so it was the same amount of work. I have not had any issues in the front position.

Re: engine location

Hei still fits. my 'burb has the engine in the rear position. Again, its a 64 and it may be different than the 67-72. The frames are generally the same as far as I know.

Re: engine location

HEI is tight, but does fit in rear position (67-72). My 383 is set in on I6 stands, & I have no issues with the distibutor......& the truck is body dropped 1 1/2" to boot. crazyL
