Re: 67-68 4 barrel air cleaner?
Mt. Man...the 1/2 t. was different than the 3/4 ton...REALLY! I have gone through this with my '68 Longhorns. Some trucks (1/2 ton I believe) had the air injection system in '68. Depending upon the model and year...there were definite differences. The picture you showed is similar to the '68 3/4 ton since it does not have the heat stove inlet on the bottom. Not sure about the other inlets however. Sorry if this is confusing but I had to start with my glove box and then moved to the Chevrolet manual to view all of the options that were shown for the various engines, truck sizes and carbs. Let me know if I can help.

Re: 67-68 4 barrel air cleaner?
Restriction is not a problem if you don't mind drilling holes on the bottom of the air cleaner.
They can not be seen and provide more air flow. Danny

Re: 67-68 4 barrel air cleaner?
That's what my 67 has, sorry I haven't got you a pic, got busy LOL. They are the same as was on cars and most trucks in the 60's. I've got an extra 2 barrel on out in the barn, the tops are the same, just don't have another 4 barrel base.

Re: 67-68 4 barrel air cleaner?
Mt. Man, '68 1/2 ton is going to have the "thermostatically controlled" air cleaner mechanism connected to the "heat stove" (sheet metal around the exhaust manifold). The service manual shows both the naked style you have shown in your picture (which I have only seen on 3/4 and 1 tons) and the thermostatically controlled unit (that they list as "standard" in the manual). Actually there were really three styles in '68, oil/paper and two different oil bath units. I am assuming you checked your glove box and did not see the oil bath option listed. I will post pictures of the two styles since I have both of them in the garage somewhere. BTW...the top lid of those old school stock units are painted black but are really unpolished chrome under that paint!
I have shown three 4-barrel air cleaners below. The one on the left came off a stock '68 327 4-barrel according to the board member I got it from. It must have been a 1/2 ton truck. The center looks identical in almost every respect except that it has a longer snout and a vacuum inlet in the back. This one is ALMOST identical to the one shown as standard in the '68 service manual (307 sticker on the lid...which makes me wonder if different displacements had different lower sections)with the longer snout and vac inlet in the back. The one on the right looks correct for a 3/4 or 1 ton but has a raised top cover for a taller element. I think it is for a different year 3/4 or 1 ton. You can see that I have collected lots of these trying to find the perfect one for my 100 pt Longhorn restoration and still don't have the answer....since I did not realize until this morning that even these three have differences. The Chevrolet service manual shows 19 different air cleaners at least 4-5 for v-8's!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! After all of this...I pretty certain the one you have shown above is NOT correct since the manual shows none with a flat bottom and that style of top. Don't forget that all of these also have a 3-4 inch sheet metal riser/spacer between the carb and the air cleaner.

Re: 67-68 4 barrel air cleaner?
Maybe someone else with an absolutely stock 327 4-barrel truck 1/2, 3/4 or 1 ton could chime in here and provide some pictures to help sort this out. I know oldiron has a 1-ton 2-barrel 327 but the engine compartment pics are on my other computer that is being repaired.
BTW Mt. Man...I would be happy to sell you one of mine cheap if it is correct for your truck but not correct for mine...LOL!

Re: 67-68 4 barrel air cleaner?
I have one like the one on the far right of stl lookn's post with the exception that the lid is flat and not raised (like later models) It does not have the vaccum actuator on the snout. It came from a 69 396 truck- 1/2 ton, and everything else was bone stock.. is this what you may be looking for? Can email a picture if you want to see it. Harold

Re: 67-68 4 barrel air cleaner?
71 Super, I would like to see that 396 air cleaner...just for S&G. I suspect it is probably different.
msgross, The pic Mt. Man posted must be for a car or earlier year since it is the reverse of the typical truck unit that has the pan shape on the bottom...not the top. I know there is a South Dakota member that has a stock 327 '68...can only be one of those...LOL!

Re: 67-68 4 barrel air cleaner?
The 4x4 brochure shows the air injection reactor system (a.i.r.) that was required on the C10 and C20 trucks destined for initial registration in CA. I guess that is why most trucks and all C30s did not have them. It also shows two different styles of air cleaner!!!! Sales and marketing..."the dark side"!
INTERESTING....my 1967 brochure shows the 1967 air cleaner IS the one pictured above by Mt. Man with the top cap (inverted dish. So the air cleaner design, like many other things, changed between 1967 and 1968! You would think this would be simple...LOL!!! Every time I look at a component on my Longhorn I am wondering if it is the proper original piece!

Re: 67-68 4 barrel air cleaner?
This oil bath air cleaner has been on my K20 burb since as long as I can remember, and my Dad said it is the one that always been on there since he had the truck.
I'd be running it today if I could find the element that goes in it! The burb has always been a CA truck, and it never had a smog pump or tubes to the exhaust manifolds. It does have the 3 inch tall stack on the carb. that the air cleaner sits on. If anyone know's where I can get the screen element for it, please let me know!

Re: 67-68 4 barrel air cleaner?
I have been looking for a 4 bbl stock air cleaner, myself for my 67 327 and from what I've been told the one pictured with the bottom pan and the top with small snout and no heat parts was correct on the 67, but some things changed from 67 to 68 like the oil filler tube. On the 67 it takes a push on oil cap and on the 68 it was a twist on cap. I took a 2 bbl bottom and a later model like the one with the top lid and cut out the bottom of the 4 bbl breather and then matched it to the 2 bbl bottom plate and cut it out and welded the two to make a 4bbl out of my bottom plate. Then used the top with the snout since they are the same. It came out pretty good. I still would like to find one orginal for the truck.
I wrote a post about which valve cover was correct on the 67 327 and found out that it could be a couple types. I need a set of valve covers and I guess, I'll go with what ever comes first. It seems that there were a few to choose from. Anyone with left overs let me know. |
