700r4 conversion

i have a '72 4x4 suburban, and I am putting a 700r4 in it. has anybody done this conversion before? i need to know what i will need as in ; conversion kit, etc.? the 700r4 will bolt right up to the np205 right? I am pretty sure i will need to shorten the rear drive and lengthen the front right? will all the linkage for the transverse case line up or will i need some kind of kit for that or what? please help if you can, thanks!

Re: 700r4 conversion

Let me preface this by saying I haven't done this swap - yet.
Once I know how bad this new administration is going to screw things up I'll be moving my 700r4 swap up to the front of this list.

If you are replacing a th350 the following applies. If you are replacing anything else forget it. The tail-less 700r4 bolts directly to the th350 to NP205 adapter that is already in your truck. Again only if you already have a th350 and NP205.

You obviously need a 700r4. Any one that isn't electronically controlled will work. If you get a 2wd version that is ok too. In the 2wd version you'll just not use the tail.

You need a "700r4 replacing a th350" output shaft from Advanced Adapters. Get on the google and type in Advanced Adapters then look for the correct output shaft on their site. Then take that part number to Summit where you can get it for less money.

Take your core 700r4 and the Advanced Adapters output shaft to a rebuilder who knows what he is doing and tell him to rebuild the unit and replace the output shaft with your new one.

When you get your rebuilt tranny back, I would leave the transfer case where it is sitting.

Pull the engine. Pull the th350. The 700r4 is almost 2 inches longer so you need to move your engine that much farther forward. With the engine out you can move the cradle forward. Rumor has it there is a bolt hole already there for a different application but again I haven't done this yet so I don't know for sure.

Bolt your new tranny to the t-case adapter. Put your engine back and verify engine cradle location.

Pull engine. Drill new holes for cradle.
Bolt in cradle.
Replace engine.

Get a new fan shroud that works with your engine closer to the radiator.

The tranny cooler lines work as-is. The linkage works but you can't shift the column to L1 without modifications to the column. Drive shafts are left alone. Transfer case location, therefore lever in cab is left alone.

It sounds like a lot of work but the folks I've talked to that have done it all say it is worth it.

The 700r4 to a np205 from a th350 is correct. However I would not relocte the engine. You could, but I have done this swap and simmler ones. Just bolt up the new tranny, You will need to move your tranny x meber back, it might have holes already there that will work, if not, brake out the drill. Then you will need to shorten the rear shaft and re trube the front. You will also have to mess with your t case linkage , and if use the stock collum shifter, you wont be able to select 1st gear, since d will be 4, 2 will be 3 and lo will be 2, or you can use a flooor shifter like a B&M.

Re: 700r4 conversion

You'll notice on a 4x4 parked next to a 2wd that the engine is farther back. In other words there is plenty of room to go forward with the engine. The other option is as skchevota stated, you can slide the t-case back and do driveshaft work. Then deal with the shifter being under the seat.
