Re: who can recognize this motor for me?
My guess is a 73/74 350 using the existing exhaust manifolds and an HEI swapped in.

Re: who can recognize this motor for me?
I see a coil mount in the intake,so if it`s original it would be pre-75.The alternator/ position, air cleaner, plug wire loom, and power steering pump/mounts make it `73 or newer. And,I`m guessing the motor was always orange by the timing marker. It could be a 400,I guess.Justa hunch.I`m taking this like a guessing game. We`ll see,I guess.

Re: who can recognize this motor for me?
That`s right. But,doesn`t everybody leave them with the truck when removing a motor? They are the alternator-mount design that would have been original to the truck.I don`t think the OP intended it this way,but this is fun!

Not sure, but I think the most common V-8's in '68 were 307's and 327's. Here is the stock 327 from a '68 GMC...

Re: who can recognize this motor for me?
Where those numbers on the altenator it's self?
I don't have access to any referances for the head mounting surface numbers, but if you can read the numbers on the drivers side, behind the head down by where the trans attaches I can look those up for you. Frank

Re: who can recognize this motor for me?
I haven't looked at any of my motors, but I swear there's a three or four digit "prefix" code somewhere, or something like that. I'd go for the ones over the bellhousing though. Although I'm thinking it's a 454 big block...

Re: who can recognize this motor for me?
Yup. Climb into the engine compartment with a flashlight and scrub with a brush & degreaser.
You will be able to feel the casting numbers with your fingers. I think maybe large journal 327's were the same block as the next years 350's and may cross file. Be aware that there were earlier small journal 327's as well. If this is the engine you are keeping, I made an online journal a couple years ago and photo'd what I went through. Haven't messed with the site for a couple years but some of the pics might come in handy. By no means am I an expert, but the engine is all I could ever have wanted it to be and was fun to build. Have fun...now go wash up the hood dust in your hair long winded ET...whew... |

Re: who can recognize this motor for me?
Get some fresh air! Do not go to sleep until you feel better!!! READ INSTEAD.
Oil fill goes in the intake manifold. Doesn't mean you don't have a '68 engine... just that the manifold is not correct. My pics are the before and after of the engine I bought from Frank. I have pics of the original but they were Polaroid and I don't have a scanner hooked up. Same engine though. Outward appearance of the block (except for 400ci) will not usually tell what engine you have without running the blocks #'s. again...Get some fresh air! Do not go to sleep until you feel better!!! |
