I need a driveshaft

I have a ford 9 inch rear and a 4l60e trans from a 06 tahoe. most of the newer trucks have aluiminum driveshats, it might be harder to get one of those shortened. should I just get one off of an older ford truck and use a conversion u joint?

Or if you're around the Baton Rouge area, go to Margot's on Airline by Choctaw.

Re: I need a driveshaft

There should be a good driveline shop in most major metropolitan areas.
Maybe not with the reputation of inland empire though http://www.iedls.com/ I believe that they are who Cajundragger is referring to and are one of the most respected driveline shops in the country. At the least I think their sight has valuable info on measuring the truck for the driveshaft.

Is the google search for driveline service in Louisiana. You have to weed out the trash but there may be something you can use.
The other option is to hunt, measure find, cut if necessary and match.
OBTW some GM and Ford drivelines use the same U joints.

Re: I need a driveshaft

Driveline shops are all over and can make you one with yoke for 75$/100$.
Just be sure to tell them if your running an auto tranny. Otherwise they might build a std tranny where there is a small pin hole in the yoke allowing trans fluid to drip through.

Re: I need a driveshaft

I've yet to have a local made shaft balance correctly. They all suck. Not to mention they wont build one to handle my hp goals.

and yes I was talking about inland empire.

I'll vouch for the one I listed above. Take a spin by there one day. You don't need to go to the main counter, just go to the side entrance and go through the roll-up door by the chainlink fence. He builds driveshafts for anything from 18 wheelers through hotrods to dragstrip.

Go through the roll-up door by the chainlink fence? No fancy office?

Now I'll put my money on this guy for a balanced shaft. He'll build you a shaft instead of giving you the shaft!

Re: I need a driveshaft

LOL. The guy's an enthusiast. He just happens to work for a place that does everything from repairs on 18 wheelers and rv's to your basic oil changes. But the owners are smart enough to realize he has his own following with hotrodders so let him basically run his own deal back there. I've used him numerous times, my neighbor used him for his 54 Chevy 1/2 ton with a 475HP motor, local mufflershop guy uses him for his Camaro drag car, etc. Sofar the only thing he hasn't been able to do for me was fix and balance a two piece BMW driveshaft, but he did get me a new one within 24 hours at a cost far below dealer / internet cost (under $400 versus $700+ at dealer). One of the few places that still understands the meaning of service and pleasing the customer.

Re: I need a driveshaft

yeah mine is already on order anyways. but being the son of a business owner, I'll never just walk past the office straight to the shop.

Re: I need a driveshaft

Once you find those guys you need to support them. The go-to guy for racers and car guys in this region (Idaho) is Jim's Driveline, he has done a couple for me and you see his work on most the cars at the shows and Firebird.

Does he do mail order? The local outfit doesn't have the best of reputations and I'd have to go to Portland or Seattle.

I need a new front half for the 71 made up pretty soon when I decide what trans will replace the 350 that is in the truck now.

Re: I need a driveshaft

You can ask him, I don't see why not. Here is his information:

Jims Drive Train Specialties Incorporated
113 E 41st St
Garden City, ID 83714
208-384-5015

The current owner (for last 30 years) is not named Jim BTW.
