Frame differences between 67 and 71

I am selling a guy a 67 frame so he can make his 71 a SWB. He is keeping his big block. What problems is he going to run into? i know he will have to notch the top of his frame for the exhaust. Is there anything else? It seems like there was something about where the power steering box mounted.

I don't think the 67 had big blocks, I'm thinking the area around the mounts need trimed on the 67frames.

A 67 frame doesn't have the "dimple" for the power steering box that 68-72 frames had. It can be cut out from the newer frame, heated and dimpled, or the PS box can be shimmed.

He'll have to use the 67-68 rad support rubber mounts, because they made them bigger from 69 to 72 and they won't fit into the smaller holes on your 67 frame.

Re: Frame differences between 67 and 71

This is exactly my set-up as well, and the responses so far are right on. My frame, suspension, and all chassis components are complete, so next is mounting the cab, bed, and front clip.

He must remember that "frame mount" items may or may not be different between 67 and 71. He should consider this every time he buys a part. One such item is the frt bumper brackets. 71-72 were different from 67-70. Also, the brake line going from a long bed to a short bed needed to be modified.

It can be done, it's just something that he will have to stay aware of constantly.

Re: Frame differences between 67 and 71

I have a 67 and the frame is dimpled for power steering and it has power steering, did I get an odd frame or was it later in 67 when they changed and added the dimple?

It's possible you got a late model 67 that came off the line with the newer style frame/power steering right before the 68 model year trucks began running down the line.

The reason the vast majority of '67 frames are straight is because GM used a ram assisted power steering set up and there was no need for the dimple.

Really? I think if you look closely you'd see that the holes in the mounts are smaller on 67-68 frames. Also the rubbers have different part numbers on most vendors sites.
I have a 68 C-10 with a 72 frame. When I ordered the 67-68 core support rubbers, they slipped right through the core support holes.
Maybe I was installing them incorrectly...

no worries Longhorn,

Any idea why GM made them different? Just seems like a strange thing to change.
