What the hell is my truck?

from the best of my knowledge, this truck is a 1967 GMC 7500. Its a V6 with a five speed and two speed rear end. I have no idea what size the motor is though. does anybody have a way to distinguish one v6 from the next?

I don't know what the engine is, but that is a tiny carburator that is sitting on top of it.

a 351 (or 305) doesn't need much for 3000 RPM.

On the passenger side of the engine behind the fuel pump there is a pad underneath the head that that has the engine size. It could be a 305, 351, 401, 432 or a 478. There was also a 379, but wasn't available in 1967. I had a 7500 dump truck with a 305, and I've seen 5500's with 478's , so it just depends on how it was optioned. I have a 351 in my 3500 dump truck and it is a hoss! I also have 401 that I'm dying to in something also! Here's a lot more info.

Thanks, I would never have picked up on that, it is a bit odd. Cool on all the engine choices in a V6, sounds like a 478 would be fun

the plug location was a real smart thing on the designers of that engine family... one of the reasons it went so long between tune ups.

I owned a early seventies GMC V6 like that and the engine spun a bearing hauling grain.
We pulled the engine and flipped it upside down, pulled the pan and then pulled the
crank without removing the pistons. Farm trick. Had the crank turned and put in new bearings slapped the pan back on and lo. It was still running when I sold the ranch
years later. Cool truck.

Are you saying that the plugs were changed more often due to their location and that meant it didn't need a full tune-up as often? I 'bout flipped when I saw where they were...never seen that before. Learn something new every day I guess.

no, the shorter plug wires didn't go bad as often. Less down time. This was the exact reason they installed them up there. Exact same reason (among others) some of the OEMs have coils mounted directly to the spark plugs these days.

BTW, its also a lesser known fact that starting in 1966 when that body style debuted, the 401 and 478 (the 379 and and 432 were offered after '72 - '74) came in Chevys. If anyone says Chevys never got GMC V6's they are incorrect in these trucks. Chevys never got them in C-50 or smaller trucks though, and they only came in that body style. The 305, 351 never came in a Chevy. Betcha a lot of folks didn't know that one, huh?

It`s cool how close that cab is at a glance and it came out at the same time.I always wondered why they did that.But,they got their money`s worth all the years that body ran.What was the last year for the Brigadere?I know Yellow Freight had more of those than anyone.
I never knew the Chevys ran V6s.

I'm not sure, but I know they ran those Brigadiers way up into the 80's (maybe even the early 90's?) This one is a '89, the front clip is more modern, but its the same cab. They were great trucks! I always thought it was funny that they got car style door strikers, and came out before our trucks.

Ah PISS! WOW! thank you everyone for your ideas, input and information! I feel like a forum rockstar ahaha. anyways yeah i got this truck for free in a house-repo deal. it hadn't run in over ten years. i through on new plug wires some gas and a jump and tada!, free truck. I have thought about ripping the flatbed off and cutting it down to size to put on a 04 duramax duallie bed but ive decided to make it an offroad recovery truck to aid the less fortunate four wheelers. So far i have gathered everything i need for the build i just need to do it. (1985 6.2 diesel motor 700r4 trans, np 208 with drivers side output flange, unimog U404 axles, and a 1967 international travelall with paneled windows which i'm cutting the back half off to make a 4door suburban so-to-speak.) pisss.... its gonna take forever, more pics soon. Thanks again everyone!

You sound my brother from another mother! GMC V6's and 6.2L Diesels are 2 of my favorite engines. I just put a 6.2L in my '67 C-30. Check out build thread below.

Wow, thats tits as hell. yeah i really like the v6. i dont care much for its gargantuan size but its pretty cool. and those diesels are cool too, htey are ridiculously hard to maintain and repair in certain cases they are a total pain in the ass but thats what kinda makes them fun. plus they get pretty respectable mileage. check out this dually my grandpa built that i took road trips in as a kid. 454 efi th400 1ton and a gear vendor. damn i wish it was still in the family.

oh duh by the way awesome job on your truck i have actually seen a picture of it somewhere else and i saved it to my comp because i thought it was soo cool. i like the wheels you used. do you plan to paint it or just leave it?
