another conversion question

I am about to start a 4x4 conversion using the DIY4x kit, on a 71 shortwide. I saw in one thread that I will have to flatten out the Frame indention where the shift linkage goes. However my frame has two indentions on each side in front of the the front cab mounts. My question is, is this normal. If so what are they for. Oh and yes the frame is splatter painted, and no I didnt do it.
