Re: Steering wheel painted
It shouldn't be a problem, I'm getting ready to paint mine with acrylic enamel. I've seen several painted wheels holding up nicely.

don't know how much this helps but I fixed a small nick in one with spot putty one time, painted with the cheapest can of black paint i could find and i still looks great...i remind you however its not in the elements its hanging in the garage...actually got it down and played with it a few days ago....but the paint took well to it

Re: Steering wheel painted
I pulled a wheel from a 65 chevy truck in a junk yard and tried to paint it with the ditzler paint I used on my car. Just make sure you clean the hell out of it before you paint it. Years of dirty hands must have embedded oil in the wheel? Sounds strange but the paint came out looking like a tie die shirt?? They do make that plastic die paint that works well, I repainted a console for a blazer and it came out looking brand new. Good luck

Re: Steering wheel painted
I patched cracks with an epoxy. Then I cleaned it good with Steel wool. Then I washed it in soap and water( the Mrs.Doesn't know about the dishwasher ).Then I hung it on a wire in the garage and used an epoxy paint to spray bomb it.3 coats. The rim is wrapped with a leather wheel wrap (I don't like holding a thin wheel) so it doesn't get much wear but the spokes still look good and it's been several years.
BTW She just walked in,looked over my shoulder and now knows about the dishwasher.

Re: Steering wheel painted
I don't remeber the epoxy,it was whatever we had at work. Some kind of two part putty epoxy.I did rinse the wheel with brake cleaner or electrical cleaner before paint though.I just used a can of Krylon to paint with.My interior was dirty and I was just spray bombing it to clean it up and make it look a bit better.
