Camaro 4 speed?
I had an idea sitting in class today. i want to switch my truck over to a 4 speed but it seems like stock 4 speeds in these trucks are just so low geared. do you think it would be possible to put an old camaro 4 speed in one of these trucks?

Re: Camaro 4 speed?
I had a 4 speed out of an 80 Camaro in my truck up until a couple of weeks ago. It worked pretty good even though I only had 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear. The only problem was that it was turning very high RPMs down the highway at 60 mph because my truck has a steep rear gear. That tranny took a dump in January so I got a 5 speed out of an 84 Camaro and it has been a good transmission. And if you do go with a Camaro 4 speed, you will need either bucket seats or a custom bent shifter.

Re: Camaro 4 speed?
When I bought the truck two years ago it had the Camaro 4 speed in it. It wasn't hard to swap to the 5 speed though. I just had to get a new clutch, cut in hole in the floor, and get my driveshaft shortened and get a longer speedometer cable.

The easy way would be to find a truck in a wrecking yard that had all of the standard shift pieces on it and get what you need. Clutch pedal and linkage Bell housing Clutch fork flywheel clutch (even if you only use it as a core) It's not hard but it is time consuming. |

It would take transferring the needed parts from one truck to the other. You would probably have an easy time of it if you had both trucks side by side, pulled the piece and cleaned it and moved it to the other truck while how it came off was fresh in your mind. It's not hard but it is time consuming. Unless you already have the car 4 speed I'd vote for the 5 speed these days to get the overdrive 5th gear. |

If your trucks an automatic now, you'll also have to change the crossmember/trans mount

Re: Camaro 4 speed?
i put a car 4 speed in my 70 pickup, hurst makes a shifter that fits with the bench seat(just barley). my truck was originally a 3 speed so it just bolted right up.

Re: Camaro 4 speed?
i used a muncie m20 (wide ratio) trans, that i had sitting around . it works very well with my combination (rear gear ratio, tire size, engine torque, weight, ect.) i'm very happy with it.

Re: Camaro 4 speed?
Even with the wide ratio box, you are still only looking at a 2.52-1 first gear and a pretty big drop to 1.88-1 in second. It takes quite a bit of rear end gear to make this work in a truck, which is much heavier then the car these transmissions were designed for.....

Re: Camaro 4 speed?
If you swap out the tailhousing on the Camaro 5 speed with one from a s-10 it will move the shifter forward almost to the stock position...the only issue will be with the speedo gear it will need to be moved to match up with the s-10 rear housing
