GMC Experts Needed..... 305 V6 Question
Hey guys,
I recently aquired a 1968 GMC 1 ton from a friend. It has a 305 V6 that runs sweet, but I have two questions. 1-How hard is it going to be to find power steering for it? I have looked around (6066 GMC board) with no luck. I have the gear box, I just need pump and brackets. 2-If the V6 ever gives trouble can I replace it with a SBC and keep the same tranny location? This is important, because the truck has a PTO dump on it, and I do not want to have to modify everything. I can change motor towers easy enough, but will it keep the same tranny location? Anybody ever swapped out a 305 V6? Thanks in advance. BBB |

Re: GMC Experts Needed..... 305 V6 Question
Finding a P/S setup is not too hard. I have had 4 or 5 of them, kept one and sold the others for $100 to $150. That included the pulleys, pump and bracket. I have a 4x4 and was able to use GM stock hoses to the steering box. They show up on Ebay every few months. Keep looking it is worth the trouble.

Re: GMC Experts Needed..... 305 V6 Question
The normal thing to do when the 305 V6 finally dies is to replace it with a small block. Several local farmers still have fleets of those old trucks that get used a few weeks a year and most of them now have V8's swapped into them.

Re: GMC Experts Needed..... 305 V6 Question
Like Erl said, they're pretty easy to find if you watch E-Bay. Stick with the 305, they're a better truck engine than a small block.
