Re: whitened some tires this weekend
Just curious how did you paint the tires? I used the Krylon fusion paint and after 2 days it turned brown and flaked off.

Re: whitened some tires this weekend
I used.... surprisingly, Rustoleum vinyl paint. Cleaned them with bleach white first, let dry, then taped off and sprayed.... They're cracking some after a couple days, but still look great from over 5 feet.
I haven't decided if i'm lowering it or leaving it.... i'm on both sides of the fence. |

Re: whitened some tires this weekend
Nice truck! I, too, am interested in seeing how they hold up to the elements. It's something I've always wanted to do but have been afraid to because I'm worried it would just flake off.

Re: whitened some tires this weekend
looks pretty good. I first thought you had ground down the tire to the white wall, as was discussed in a previous thread...
looks great lowered

Re: whitened some tires this weekend
It's been raining nonstop for the last two days here. I haven't looked at the condition of the tires other than driving by when i get home from work. But from a few feet while rolling, they still look good. If you don't clean the tire enough before painting it, you are painting a dirty surface, plus, if you use paint that's for a solid surface, it won't adhere properly.
I didn't sand or scuff anything. Not even my knuckles. hah. I just sprayed it down with Bleach White, let it sit long enough for me to walk to the back of the house and fill a five gallon bucket with water from the hose, then i rinsed them off and went inside for an hour to let them dry off completely. Then i masked off at one of the lines before the tread pattern and used a knife to trim away the circle. I could've spent more time on the tape work. I would've had less touch up work needing to be done afterwards. The Rustoleum Vinyl paint, i thought would work being that it's for softer materials like Vinyl, plastic, leather, whatever. It seems to stick well to rubber. I did approx. 2 wetcoats, one over the other. I'm sure it would've been even nicer with more than 2 coats. But, I don't know where to find white walls that wide.... I think it looks great. I still wanna measure it and see how wide i have em'..... I found a set of air shocks for the rear that have a 7 inch drop. I figure i'll pick those up, then i'll need something for the front. This is all low buck, as you can see. How low can i go in the front without spending much money... It rides like a lumber wagon now anyways, so i'm not very concerned with that. |

I'll keep you guys posted on how long it takes for these to look like crap. I noticed small cracking on 2 tires just now, but other than that, the rain cleaned them up more. haha. My boss and the other guys at work haven't seen the truck since i painted the wheels, but i told them about it and am getting alot of grief over it. I think comments and thumbs up on the truck have gone up by 3000 percent. Seriously. I don't drive anywhere without getting at least 2 people show approval in one way or another. Cheap alternative for a cool look in my book. so far it's good for 3 days. Here's the pics i got of the process. The Cleaner [IMG][/IMG] Before.. The nervous truck awaits. Re: whitened some tires this weekend
It's been almost a couple of weeks and the tires are still white. There's hairline cracks all over them, but i didn't do multiple coats just like 2 quit wetcoats. I think it wouldn't have cracked so quickly if i did 2 or 3 lighter coats. It gets alot of mixed opinions from everyone, but i like it, so that's what matters. I'm gonna start sanding the letters off the sidewalls within the next couple weeks and take more time masking and prepping the tires, then i'll use that rubber paint that's made for tires. It'll be alot more satisfying to allow people to view it up close. lol. I try not to get too concerned with what people think of my projects, but at the same time, you always want an opinion. The spray paint was a great decision to see how your vehicle would look with wide whites. Two thumbs up for this technique from me for the low buck look.

Re: whitened some tires this weekend
Ya know, this paint sticks pretty damn good for spray on. I'm surprised at how long it's lasting while not turning yellow or flaking off.

Re: whitened some tires this weekend
I get bored and the fine line tape comes out.I'll come up with something and drive around with it on for the weekend.
I was thinking add another set at the bottom of the quarter stretching to the middle of the door panel. [IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG] Last edited by exmonkeypunk; 04-11-2009 at 10:21 PM. |
