Just found out that my drums are shot on my Eaton rear end. The drums will run me about $220 each plus shipping. I've been told that I could change them over to disc brakes for less. I have a salvage yard pretty close so I can hunt down parts.

What's your thoughts on the disc brake conversions?

Is it a better way to go or not?

I do but I have a 14bolt rearend.
You need a diskbrake conversion mounting bracket to mount the calipers too...not sure if anyone makes one for Eaton rear..google it

I have disks on my 14 bolt but I don't have Ebrake. It's a good cheap way of going to disk using all the stuff from a dana 44. There is a way of doing the ebrake using a line locks but I have never done it.

heheheh ya not to many people modifying that old axle, cheeper to just swap in a 14FF and be done

Thanks for the information. I was just looking into swapping the axles. Is the only certain years that will be a direct swap without moving anything?

find the cheapest (best shape with correct gears) axle and weld your own perches on if they aren't correct.

there are some board vendors selling rear disc kits and
www.diy4x4.com has tons of cheap brackets for you...

I have disks on all my rigs.

a 1ton 14B is a bolt into our trucks, they use the same pad spacing. They're also likely to have 4.10 gears and some had detroits.

the CUCV axles are a 1 ton variant that will bolt in as well.

Then you're onto to the disk brakes.

BTW, a line locker on your existing brake system is not a street legal emergency brake. It needs to be separate from your normal braking system.

I run driveline e-brakes.

man that is a sweet set up. May just have to look into that. Missouri doesn't check for Ebrakes so I have been without since I went with the rear diskes.

That's an advantage.

NH does check, so I have that on my Jeeps, (14B rear with disks) (x2 Jeeps).

I went with Caddy calipers on the C/K conversion from Blackbirds.

I went with the 14 BFF. I found one for $100 on craigslist. It looks to be in good shape. I'll post pics tomorrow.

I love my eaton way to much to get rid of it and its the same price to convert a 14blt as an eaton so no reason to change it out. I think I have less then 100 in the disk convertion.

If you get two front rotors and calipers for a mid 80's 3/4 ton 4x4 from the local parts house you can make your own mounting bracket with a torch, drill, & grinder. Get your calipers loaded. that means they come with pads, clips, bolts, ect. Or you can find the mounting brackets new on ebay.

Replying to the question in the Front or the Rear? If for everyday driving as viewed on just about every vehicle, the calipers are in front. If you are doing alot of offroading, with hardly any road time then in the rear would be preferable. That way as to not damage the calipers on any rocks or objects. Hope this helps. Mine are in the front since this will be a more road vehicle with maybe a little mud and crud now and then.
