Re: Tranny Whine?
It sounds like the rear end. Raise the rear of the truck. With the trans in neutral grab the pinion yoke. It will have a little turning free play but must not have any back & forth looseness. Pull the cover & do the same with the carrier assem. It to will have a little rotation freeplay but must not have any side play. If they do you have some worn bearings & need an o-haul.

Time to check the diff oil level before you drive it again.

Re: Tranny Whine?
Probably worn gears. An oldtimer told me Gears whine, teeth click and bearings roar. Since it only happens in 3rd I would say 3rd gears are worn. I've heard worse and yours doesn't sound that bad and other than annoying noise should last many more miles. Best way to check where it is coming from put rear on jack stands put it in gear and listen with a heater hose shoved on a piece of pvc pipe so you don't have to crawl under the truck.

Re: Tranny Whine?
I'd check the rear end & trans. grease before I ever drove it.
