My 67 Build Thread

Neat old truck. I paid a lot more for my '67 so don't worry about what you paid, it was worth it. There aren't many '67's to find anymore. You can get a patch panel for the dash. I must say the P.O. was pretty enthusiastic with the sawzall between the doors and the radio, but those are fairly simple problems. Finding a seat shouldn't be a problem either, any early 90's Chevy bench works great in these trucks, but you have to drill new holes. Have fun with the project, take one thing at a time, and don't feel ovewhelmed. It's a long journey, but it still takes little steps to get to the end. One more thing: make a habit of hanging out in the parts section. If you're not too picky about used stuff (like the tail light lenses) you can pick stuff up on the cheap.

Thanks. Yeah. Im not too worried about the doors or the dash. Like u said, fairly simple issues. Notice that one door has one speaker and the other has two. haha. He must have liked the sawzall. I may have found a 67 bench seat locally. Just waiting to hear back and see some pics. Thanks for the support and motivation. It is pretty overwhelming because I wanna do everything right the first time around and I wanna do everything to it. But you are right, I just have to take my time and tackle one task at a time. I have been hanging out in the parts section. Just checking out my options first. I definitely like used, cheap, original and Made In U.S.A parts. Thanks for the info.

Update:
So I got some new battery cables installed. Replaced the fan and a/c belt. Also had the alternator tested and it failed. Replaced that too. Noticed Im gonna have to go through my wiring due to melting and rat/mouse nibbling. Oh, and my alternator bracket was cut, spaced and re welded. Then a spacer put in the bolt. Weird but I guess it works. I started her up and she started pretty good. Still haven't found the right air filter. I went to pull the choke button and it popped off. Bummer. And then I gave the engine a few revs without the choke and I got a nice puff of black smoke. And went and looked and I have black oil spatter on the ground. Not a good thing. I guess I'm gonna pull the motor and have it rebuilt. I don't wanna go V8 and don't really wanna drop a diesel in this one. So Im gonna have the 292 rebuilt. I am hoping some of you guys could chime in and give me suggestions on the rebuild. As far as good parts and who to order from. I want the motor to be reliable and run good. Some extra power would be great. Let me know what you think.

Seriously though, pull it out, tear it down. Vat the head and the block. Turn the crank, recondition the rods, bore the cylinders .030 over, align bore the block for the crank, have the deck surfaced for the head, do a 3 angle vavle job on the head, have it milled .030 also. New stock valve springs, new hardened pushrods, get an RV cam kit with lifters, put it back together.

Sounds good. Ill look into it all. I've never rebuilt an engine, so this should be interesting. No big deal though.

The most important things to remember are not to "knick" the crankshaft with the rod bolts when you're installing the pistons/rods, make sure you get the main bolts, rod bolts and head bolts torqued properly (torque them in 15lb increments until you reached the desired ft lbs of torque and do the head in a circular pattern starting with the center bolt and working your way out in a circular motion), keep everything clean as you go and break the cam in properly by immediatly bringing the engine up to 2500 rpm when you fire it up (don't crank it too long, if it won't start find the problem) and vary the rpm from 2000 to 3000 for 25 minutes. change the oil. Be sure to use GM EOS lube for your break in too and always use the grease that comes with the cam and lifters as well. Oil your bearings with a straight 50w oil as you install them.

Most of the technical stuff you need to know like torque specs you can find in pretty much any rebuild book.

This will yeild you about 180hp and close to 250 ft lbs of torque. Pretty good for a 6.

Thanks for the advice. I picked up a Haynes Manual today. Just haven't cracked it open yet.

As for the hp and torque, not bad. I think that would be good for what Im looking to do. Thanks.

Update:

Well, I got the engine running much better. I believe the oil out the exhaust was due to a stuck valve or something. Who knows. But its not doing it anymore. I pulled the carb and cleaned it up. Popped on a new air filter. New carb fuel filter and inline fuel filter. Tried to clean the tank as best I could without too much work. I don't plan on keeping the tank so I just dumped the old stuff and put in some fresh stuff and lucas fuel treatment. She starts up with no problem and hardly hesitates and sounds pretty decent too!

I also picked up another 67 cab, which is in much better shape than mine. It included a clean/uncut dash, 67 seat belt set, gas tank, clean small rear window, clean/uncut driver and passenger doors with all hardware and inner panels, and no holes in the roof or floor. I also picked up a nice set of 15 inch 6 lug rallys with 235/75r15 tires in good condition. Already mounted those on the truck and man does it look better. All thanks to Pete. Thanks again man!

Anyways, I will try to post some pics soon of the new stuff. I'm kinda holding off on tearing down the truck right now. Im still waiting for my paperwork to register it and title it. Once I get that taken care of, I will tear it down and have fun breaking those old bolts loose. My shopping list keeps changing on a daily basis. I can't wait.


On a side note, in order to run a 4/6 drop, will I need to c notch the rear???

haha. Im sure you would. And many others would too. I might sell you my old cab for that price, when it comes time to sell it.
