Am I nuts or is the seller nuts?
So...ive been shopping for a decent 67-72 swb truck on and off for a few years now. It seems everything is either out of my price range or is a total pos (price range ~5k). I ran up on http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=170334120674. At first I thought it would make a nice truck to fix since it looks like it would be a solid driver with a little work. Then I noticed the owners comments regarding an almost 20k appraisal and show quality. Is it me or is he totally off his rocker? I can maybe see that truck pre-accident winning a show in a small town with like 10-20 cars in it....MAYBE. I mean the seat didn't get that way from any accident, the dash looks like it needs recovering, Jensen radio with random speakers in the doors, gauge cluster doesn't look like it has ever received any attention, 88-94 steering wheel.
EDIT: dunno why link isn't working...copy pasting it works though Last edited by thepenguin99; 05-22-2009 at 12:39 AM. |

I get nothing from links.Phone appraisals are decietful.Or,it was apraised a good while ago. Some folks have trouble mixing the past with present. You see,the past grows farther and farther away.Only the present sits still. But,not in the future, like tomorrow

Does that link work? If now, just use the Item number in a search
Item number: 170334120674 Yeah, it looks like someone has modded it a little bit, and isn't really factory anymore.

Re: Am I nuts or is the seller nuts?
The only way that seat got like that from hitting a deer is if the driver craps acid! Of course, with that whole spiel you never know.

Re: Am I nuts or is the seller nuts?
that's what I was thinking... doesn't look like any MINOR frame damage I've ever seen. If was such an easy fix to get this truck back to it's $20k show quality status, wouldn't they just have fixed this 'minor' damage and kept the truck? If I had a $20k classic truck, I'd have a policy on it to cover that! I have a $10k 'antique/classic' car policy on my '69 and there's NO WAY it'd bring that on the open market...

Great project/Parts truck, I would be imbarassed to show that even before it was "totaled, take a 4,500 truck run it into a deer and do 5,000 damage = ?

Re: Am I nuts or is the seller nuts?
Not in my neck of the woods, around here it would have to be perfect to pull that kind of jack, I am looking at the spray paint interior job, toggle switch sticking through the dash, peeling bezel, rotten seat, wiring hanging all under the dash, incorrect sterring wheel, etc. and figure that kind of work would be carried through the whole truck. remember you can't polish a turd, and ten large around here takes alot of polish.

Re: Am I nuts or is the seller nuts?
Wow. Some people think they own gold mines I guess. Before the accident that may have been a 4k truck around here. And that all depends on what you can't see from the pictures.
By the way, I've hit deer before. What kind of deer did they hit to buckle the bumper and twist the frame like that?

Re: Am I nuts or is the seller nuts?
To give the seller a little credit. My guess is the frame damage is relatively minor. To me, the rear bumper doesn't look like it is from the frame being twisted. If it is though....oh boy is someone in for a treat. It would certainly explain the seller not fixing it.

Re: Am I nuts or is the seller nuts?
hey I use to live in Lebanon, MO...
I hit a deer a few years ago much harder than that, and it didn't smash my windshield... wonder what his reserve is, I would not want to pay over $1000, on it, unless really checked out the frame.. and its been wrecked for some time...

Re: Am I nuts or is the seller nuts?
Not THAT big. 250 pounds or so is pretty big in the midwest. They must have hit a BIG deer going REALLY fast to do that kind of damage.

Re: Am I nuts or is the seller nuts?
I'll say a few things in the sellers defense. One, a deer once hit that rolls over the hood would do exactly that, take out the windshield. We have folks killed here in AZ every year hitting elk, seems cars cut the legs off then the body rolls into the windshield DOA.
Second, the windshield is out of the truck for all intents and purposes, so the seat has been exposed to the weather for a year or so, no biggy get another seat. The rear bumper is more than likely where the wrecker hooked onto the truck, or while loading it up. When I rolled my 05 Yukon the wrecker driver rolled it back onto the tires by rolling it onto the side that hadn't been damaged, thanks to him there wasn't a straight panel on the Yukon!! As for the appraisal, well beat him up all you want, BUT and this is a big one! build a truck like that (pre-accident) and do it for the crap low ball money you think it's worth and then talk trash! It never ceases to amaze me how folks jump on a vehicle because the seller wants too much for the vehicle. I don't know about you all, but I have built a few of these things and $5k doesn't buy crap, $10k barely does, so how is that ruck not worth the $20k appraisal?? My 70 Camaro appraised for over $40k, wanna bash it, go ahead, could I sell it for that, no, but what would it cost to replace it, and that you NAY-SAYERS is why we appraise and insure our vehicles, they are not just objects, my Camaro is irreplaceable. $40k wouldn't do it, I have 20+ years of history with it, how much is that worth?? One owner, #'s matching, find one LMK? |

Re: Am I nuts or is the seller nuts?
Exactly. 250 lbs is BIG for a midwestern whitetail deer. And even then it's probably only maybe 4 ft tall at the shoulders. I guess my point is that the driver of that truck must have been flying down the road and never slowed down to do that much damage to that much steel.

Re: Am I nuts or is the seller nuts?
He doesn't say what he hit after he hit the deer either.
Anyhow, It's a shortie builder that will have to go on the frame machine or have a new frame. If it was appraised for that amount it was probably insured for that or close and if the insurance paid off and let him keep the truck there is most likely no clear title. I'd say it is worth what you can actually see in it and that is probably less than 1/3 of the reserve. Clear title with the truck maybe 2,500 no title just what you would be willing to pay for the cab and nice box with a good rear bumper. Parts is parts, what are the parts worth? |

He also illudes to a value, which as you stated is far from relevent even if it was not totalled. You can tell us how much it costs to build, that is another number that is just as irrelevant. The only issue that I have, is people putting an arbitrary value on something in an attempt to icrease it's sales price. To me it is a suspect sales tactic, and I will not pass up an opportunity to add my opinion whenever I see it happening. If you call it "jumping on a vehicle" then you miss the point that we made, you should say " jumping on the seller and his description of a product for sale" As far as your Camaro goes, I have had many Camaros, and Chevelles that are very valuable "in my opinion" . But in reality they were worth what was the fair market value at the time, and ultimately what a ready, willing, and able buyer was willing to pay. Period. I am sure it is nice, but probably worth more to you than most of us. But if you put it out there and it is not pristine and tell me it will be worth X amount of dollars,"when done" I am going to look at you the same way I look at all car salesmen, with a little disgust. I will then pay your price, or whatever I believe it to be worth to me, whichever is lower. |
