engine straps??
anybody know what these straps are for on the engine? they bolt to my A/c on the passanger side and to the exhaust manifold with a tiny bracket on the driver side. My friend says its to hold the engine down when you get on it to spare the engine mounts life.are they necessary if i'm putting in a new engine? |

Re: engine straps??
They were installed by dealers as a recall fix to prevent catastropic occurances should a engine mount fail. They were put on 70 and down trucks, the engine mount failure was the main reason for GM going to the cable throttle in 71- In 70 mounts broke and throttle would stick open. There are sets that show up on ebat from time to time, just have to keep an eye out- listed as engine stop lift sometimes.

Re: engine straps??
they're a factory recall torque straps there should be a set on the drivers side (which are alot more important) theory is ifin case of motor mount failure they prevent engine relocation
hotrodders and racers have been using them since the earliest times of performance modifications

Re: engine straps??
IMHO ... WHY NOT?
I have always strapped down my engines and these work well. Put all together then try the tie downs. Last edited by ETsC10; 05-22-2009 at 11:18 PM. |

Re: engine straps??
yeah thats probably what'll do
my only question is though if they DIDN'T fit would it be safe to drive without em? If i upgraded my motor mounts to some high strength ones or something would I be better off? |

Re: engine straps??
I would definately go with Energy Suspension brand replacement motor mounts. The metal portion is interlocked inside the polyurethane portion so, in the unlikely event of a polurethane failure, the mount cant seperate.

Re: engine straps??
I think they look cool and are a neat conversation piece at shows, and now you have a story to tell people who ask about 'em (isn't this place great?) So I say run 'em
