next problem,spindle shim?
When I tore down the truck, there was a shim behind the RF spindle. Stupidly, I thought nothing about it at that point and took it out. Later as I cleaned the parts I found that this thing is a wedge. It is tapered. Now I have no idea which way the thick side went.
At this point my plan is to use a machinist level and level the frame side to side. Then check the axle tubes and then the spindles. I am hoping that this will tell me if the spindle is kicked up or down and where the shim goes. Anyone have any experience with this shim or ever seen one?

Re: next problem,spindle shim?
i`d do what you plan...level axles and check square/plumb of spindle base @ knuckle. Most likely it was installed to camber-out or tilt the top outward, putting the shim at the top.Just the nature of wear and and gravity usually puts the top at a lean inward. It`s pretty rare to need those shims on an alignment.I`ve never needed one.
You might also check for a straight line across the tubes. It will be a very minor difference. You`d have to pull a string or lay a straight-edge across at a given height off the axle tubes at each end. Then, check towards the center for a dip or crown.Usually it`s an axle tube "settled",giving a larger number at the differential housing. It`s either the tubes not truly inline or a tilt to the knuckle in relation to the tube(how it was assembled, usually). It takes alot to move these...very rare.Usually it`s how they were originally assemble.Just a tad off.

Re: next problem,spindle shim?
Special-k is absolutely correct. These are "alignment" shims, intended to make up for a camber problem. I have only ever seen one that that was from the factory (as far as we could tell). The rest were done to make up for what could really only be bent parts....the tube or the C bracket. I think I only ever saw a half dozen of them in over 10 years working in a place that specialized in 4x4s.
It probably goes with the widest part toward the top, or close to it. "Hopefully" you have both sides apart...and the shim is only under one side. If so, I would "adjust" the jack-stands to make the spindle-flange area of the knuckle on the side w/o the shim so that it is perfectly plumb. Then, check the other side. Put the shim to get it perfectly plumb too. When the weight gets back on the truck, there will be the slighest bit of negative camber. Be sure to measure for "toe" after you put the wheels back on.

Let us know what you figure out.I imagine you`ll need some careful set-up and measuring. It won`t be that far off.

Re: next problem,spindle shim?
I would leave it out and put the truck back together. If you think you have an alignment problem when it is done, take it to a shop to be checked. I think a lot of alignment guys put those things (and the eccentric ball joint adjuster sleeves) in there to justify their fee.
