getting rally wheels that need painting..

found 4 15/8 rally wheels 5 lug that need sandblasting and painting, whats the color called, the silver looking color?

should i spraybomb them, or spend the extra $ and do it right, how much would paint/primer be for them, where can i get it at, and how much do i need?

can i sandblast the wheels with tires already on them or no?

and does $100 sound like a deal, or no deal for the wheels, this is MAYBE with caps included...

Thanks!!!

The color is argent silver... asa far as price, depends of the condition of the tires. they go for about 20 each with rings around here

Re: getting rally wheels that need painting..

It's hard to paint them right with the tires on the wheels.
100 might not be out of line if all the caps and rings are close to perfect. I don't know what they go for around here but the 20/25 price range is probably close.
Lately though anything that can be called "Rally" seems to comand a stiff price.

Re: getting rally wheels that need painting..

Need to know the tire size, then there are charts you can check on the different tire sites.

$100.00 is a very good deal around here...I would strip the paint, primer them then spray paint...

Re: getting rally wheels that need painting..

$ 125 for five. The caps & trim rings were scrounged & cheap. The narrow (van) trim rings are very slightly mis-matched on the right & left side of the truck, but nobody but me seems to ever see it.

No sandblaster available at the time that I wanted to roll with them, & no argent silver at O'Reilly's, so it was wire brush on an electric drill, wipe clean with thinner, & WalMart rattle can silver. Two days hardening time & the new tires went on.

Definitely they're "wrong" compared to being truly correct, but these wheels never came on these trucks anyhow !!! Grandad always said: "Boy, poor folks like us has poor ways."

Several years later, they still look pretty good, and the shiny silver has faded a bit to look a lot more argent-like.

I paid $150.00 with caps and rings.I didn't want to use a silver so painted mine Metallic Charcoal. The rings are in great shape the caps are ok but I don't like the 4X4 caps.

Re: getting rally wheels that need painting..

Just wire brush with a drill attachment. Get the crud off. Sand them with 150-220 to get all the imperfections blended out, prime gray, sand with 800. Wash the rims with light soapy solution. Rinse very well. Make sure ALL moisture is gone. Paint. Go light first coat. I like to lay a heavy second coat. 3rd coat if necessary. Done. Clear if you like.
FYI. I just painted a set with plasti-kote argent silver p/n 621. I had a can of aluminum paint also. I can't tell the difference. I feel the argent although correct, is too bright. I wound up using plasti-kote steel, p/n 618. It's a shade or two darker and trim rings and center caps contrast well.

I sanded mine, primed them and painted them with metalic silver, I know it's not the factory color but I like it.

I highly recomend NOT going with chemical stripper. Sand blast them, sand them by hand, wire wheel them... but no chemicals.

Here are mine. I just used aluminum silver enamle with a couple coats of clear. Wouldent suggest using aluminum silver unless your clear coating it, without clear coat they just look cheap

I think these questions were answered already. Spray can clear is available also. Check the rack you get the paint from.

Clean em' and paint em'!!! All you see is the middle with caps and rings. I tend to laugh when I see or read about blasted and p/coated ralleys. Over done and over spent for a $25 wheel IMO.

Re: getting rally wheels that need painting..

If their not scratched and scarred up real bad take a scotch brite pad and mix up some soapy water (we use to use spic n' span powder) and scrub them real good. That's all I did to mine and they still look good after 17 years(when they're clean lol).

Re: getting rally wheels that need painting..

There are actually a couple of variants on the argent colors. Light Argent (sometimes referrred to as Light Argent Silver) is the "correct" GM color. Eastwood (www.eastwood.com) has Silver/Argent Rally Wheel Paint for $10.99 per can. A 12 oz can is supposed to cover two wheels. I like Rally wheels and tend to like them painted in the factory style. Never have been a big fan of Rally wheels painted body color because I prefer the wheel to stand out from the body. I like to chemical strip the wheels because it gets rid of everything and then blast them (of course, I have a friend dip and blast them and it's free!). After the strip/blast, I wipe them down, spray them, and let them set up for a couple of days.

Re: getting rally wheels that need painting..

Before you paint, take them to the carwash and spray them down with degreaser. Then wash the crap outta them, rinse the crap outta them.Wipe them dry with a tack rag(lint free) and then let them set for a day or so before painting. The crevices where the center and the rim are bonded are prone to collecting, sand (from sandblasting),residue(from chemical stripping) or dust from sanding. This will cause bubbles in that area.I used a little spray of brake cleaner on mine.Sprayed them with a spray bomb, light coat(just enough to cover) heavier coat (two then let dry depending on recommendations on can. Then two heavy but very even (light enough to not run) coats of clear.
That's how I did it and they came out well.
If you ever spray from a can of "Eastwoods" paint you will realize that spray cans can be a quality product.
