operation daily driver... my new 64

hey guys.. ive been a member for a while.. and have had one build thread already.. which wasnt very good, and i never was happy with the way i built it, and was considering tearing down and rebuilding completely when i stumbled upon this..

im not sure if they are dropspindles or not. but it came with disk brakes, power steering and powerbrakes.. frame has been powdercoated and everything is chromed.. but where it sat outside for a few months everything chrome surface rusted and some pitted. but nothing too bad.

i bought it today. and took half of the junk home..
i will take pictures of the rest of the stuff tomorrow.. as i will be sandblasting all the body work and getting it ready for paint.. the body is very strait so it shouldnt take too long.. but i guess ill find out tomorrow.

my plans for this beast

--engine and transmission from my old truck
350 bored .30 over
268h comp cam
dual plane high rise manifold
holley 750 cfm
m-21
--paint
corvette victory red, and black
--wheels
15x10 and 15x6

The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

I don't think those are drop spindles. But it looks like a solid foundation and I like your plans!

Re: operation daily driver... my new 64

ordered front cab supports, and partial rockers today.. almost finished sandblasting cab but weather stopped me a little shy..

pulled motor and trans out of old truck and prepping for re-paint and hopefully placing on frame soon.

QUESTION.. has anyone ever used aircraft paint remover?? thinking about using that from now on instead of sandblasting..

I used the air craft paint remover but didn't really work that well. Sand blasting will but what a mess. I did grinding, wire brush, paint strip pads, paint remover and sand blasting on my cab.

Re: operation daily driver... my new 64

IMO media blasting (sandblasting) is the only way to go, but you need the proper equipment so it isn't a big PITA. Paint stripper has it's place such as large flat panels than would likely warp if you were to blast all the paint off. You can take most of the paint off with the stripper and then dust over it with the blaster.

Re: operation daily driver... my new 64

There is a bunch of info in paint and body section on this subject. Seems people go back and forth on what they like. If you're sick of dust, stripper is the way to go.....but then you have a mess of goo to clean up. It appears that neither method is exactly perfect.

Re: operation daily driver... my new 64

An experienced blaster can strip your whole truck body to bare steel without causing any adverse effects. This way there are no questions whether there are any hidden areas of rust or questionable body work. Plus you can start over from the steel up with today's better quality primers and paints. Just don't have it done with silica sand or baking soda. Just my .02
