Cool dually towing

hey guys i was wondering if anyone knows how much an 87 k30 reg cab 7.4L turbo400 4.10 gear dually with cab lights pwr door locks pwr windows am/fm with cassete radio! custom made towing hitch which is all sorts of tied into the frame and bumper (fabricated by a machine shop mostly 1/2 inch steel) can tow? oh yea its got a/c heat dual batterys 12,000bs wich on the front which is also all sorts of tied into the frame (also made by machine shop) silverado because all this additional random info has no bearing on the subject of towing except for the bumper and driveline specs oh yea and has a trans cooler with fan and tilt steering and cruise control. so yea i want to bumper tow a 13,000 pound trailer 365 miles and was just wondering if it is going to pull the wheels of the ground because i know the hitch isnt going anywhere

You're going to go thru some serious fuel. Sounds like a cool truck tho! Prob a V30 tho, not a K from 87 on.

Last week I purchased a 1989 crewcab Dually V30 454(7.4tbi) with TH400. All the info I could find prior to purchase based the tow abilities on the gearing. I can't imagine a single cab would be less, but don't know for sure. Below is the info for my truck which is a crew cab.

GCWR 16,000lbs; 19,000 with 4.56/5.13 axle.
GVWR is 10,000lbs
Max towing with bumper is 10,000lbs
Max 5th wheel towing is 11,000lbs and a 4.56 is 14,000lbs
Max payload is 5150lbs

You want to bumper pull a 13,000# trailer with a regular cab dually??? Yeah I expect the front tires to float.

I've bought lots of K30's over the years and never found the limit of the trucks while towing. I've never loaded my current V30 like some of my past trucks. This pic of my 77 K30 with 400sb/T400/4.10 rears after a 2000 mile trip.

front end might feel a little light but I think it should be fine with that big block hangin out front. my 90 half ton short bed pulls a 16,000 gooseneck with no problems

Why would the front end go up at all? Tongue weight does that, if you have MAJOR tongue weight it would, but there is no reason you should have that.

in my 1986 c30 crew cab dually i used to pull a 44 foot pace american enclosed (gooseneck)with 2 cars in it with 2 spare engines, tools, a couple spare tannys etc from phoeix az to memphis tenn on a regular basis, pulled like a champ and never had any issues either... hope this helps you... these trucks are beasts... btw, mine has 409,000 miles on the clock now...still my daily driver! woo!!

I have the same truck, I use it only to pull my race car trailer, it's a heavy goose, not a bumper puller but here's the extras I've done over the years ..

airbags, I was finding the front end light to, and was having troubles stopping , bags cured this
Aftermarket FI, I added Edelbrock port injection, more power and better mileage
Headers, needed just a tad more performance then the factory setup, plus no more warped manifolds
large trans cooler, get the largest one you can stuff in the grill area, a cool trans is a happy one ../
I try not to run the carrier bearing more then 3 years od 10,000 miles, no real reason, just my preference

well after owning a few C-30's....I have hauled about everything from goosenecks to fifth wheels to things I probably shouldnt have towed. Pulled our John Deere out of the ditch once...tractor running of course. The present C-30 I havent hauled alot with. But I know one thing...I will go sideways if stomped on!

I have no doubt what so ever that your truck will do the job, when I was in high school my dad had a 83 K-30 3+3 Camper special, it had a 454 and a 4 speed, 4.10 gears, and it was a pulling machine! I pulled his 32' deck goose neck tandem dual trailer all over the country side with it, loaded to the gills with pipe, parts, or even vehicles, you could stick 2 full size ford vans on that trailer, or even an Excavator. It was great for getting the job done.

As well we had a 30' trailer to move our bobcat tractor and mini trackhoe around on. I am proud to report that with both the skid steer and the trackhoe on there, the 83 could lug em no problem. even when you had the bucket, forks, trencher, and post hole'er for the bobcat on there. The trailer empty was very heavy as well, the frame on it was made out of 8" C-Channel.

I pulled this equipment over all kinds of unpaved mountain roads with steep grades, hard corners and did so in inclement weather IE snowing sideways.

I can assure you that the truck will pull it as long as you aren't too heavy on the tongue. When pulling heavy weight, you just need to be smart about it, keep your head on straight, be safe, and if necessary take it slow.
