Vintage intake and valve cover install

So I've been wanting to give my engine a nice period look, and luckily I scored this old Offy intake at a swap meet for cheap because someone had butchered the t-stat housing holes. I work next to a welding and fab shop, and I've know the owners since I was a teenager and they fixed me up no charge. They ended up selling me the valve covers for cheap when they found out that is the look I was going for, since they had no use for them.



Since the valve covers have no holes,but the intake had the oil fill and breather, I just needed to come up with a spot for a PCV valve. I drilled and tapped the back of the intake to except a screw in PCV out of a Tundra from my work.





I made a little baffle and had the fab shop boys weld it in also.



It's hidden nicely behind the runners and distributor and has enough clearance for servicing.

Here's the new, what do you think? Can you spot the PCV valve? Not a huge difference but I'm happy now.

They pretty much used the same air cleaners back then.

You know I like your style (because it`s alot like mine..haha).That`s another nice touch on your truck,for sure.
I`m building this`67-looking GMC on a`71 frame.I have a`71 350,but when I found a`68 327 I had to go with that for another`67-ish cue.Ok,they look just like 350s,right?I went out and found 64cc old-style heads for the rebuild and already had a Torker manifold off a 327.Well...I let my machinist talk me out of using the high rpm manifold in favor of an air gap dual plane.Now I`ve got inferior alternator and a/c mounting on a motor that looks like a 350.Oh well...now I have a dual snorkle air cleaner and valve covers from an LT1.I`d like to come across a more suitable old-style intake.

SWEET! I love the Oil Tube, I like the O/E look. doin about the same with my L6. But are those zip ties on the fuel line?

I like the direction in which your heading, Chris. I've had my eye on an old set of Cal Custom finned valve covers, now I may have to break them out of hbernation! but never though of an Offy intake. me likey!!!

Did you make or buy an alternator bracket to work with headers?I need to come up with something for mine.

I can't get enough of vintage hot rod parts. Here's my 327 I just built. The intake in the picture is just a dust cover not the final intake. The valve covers are factory Corvette pieces.



This is the intake I am using. I got it for 40 bucks at a swap meet. I sure paid hell getting all of the old rusty fittings out and drilling out that misdrilled broke off thermostat housing bolt.



After more work than I care to admit to.

Good looking engines guys, I plan on putting a Pertronics kit in an old points distributor I have so I can loose the "late" look of the HEI.

Tx, my buddy picked up the same manifold at swap meet awhile back for $60. I was trying to talk him out of it right up until I found my Offy. These old intakes sure do get messed up by the gorilla's that own them before we get our mits on them.

Powell, I know where there is a killer deal to be had on a very nice Edelbrock C4B intake manifold. It's older than mine and very nice. He wants 75 for it.

TTT.... I'm moving forward w/mine but have a question for the 'been there, done that' crowd.

I like the 'hidden' PCV set-up Chris used. What would a guy do for venting the motor if he didn't use that breather/oil fill tube intake but still want's solid (no holes) valve covers?

I know the draw backs.... But what could be used to allow the pressure to vent/breathe (or is the PCV enough)?

Scotti, If you only had the PVC hidden on the back would you use o funnel for adding oil or how would you get it in?

You could always run a breather like this that bolts to the side of the valve cover-

You definitely want to run a breather and PCV, so that the engine can breathe properly.

And just an update on this setup. After I got this installed and drove it for awhile I noticed my truck had an oil consumption problem big time, like almost a quart a week, were before this setup it used NO oil between oil changes. I did some searching and found people with the PCV in the intake like myself were all having the same problem. The air vapors in the lifter valley are so contaminated with oil that the PCV sucks it up, no matter how good of a baffle you put on the underside of the intake.
I pulled my hair out and tried a bunch of different things and ended up using a PCV valve from a '67 Chevelle that screws into the back of the carb, that pulls instead of pushes air, and I have it connected via hose to a fitting in the side of the valve cover that I drilled and tapped. I had a baffle welded into the inside of the valve cover also. Oil consumption problem gone. It's not as stealthy as the other setup but pretty close. I'll get a pic posted of the new setup.

The PCV valve is for a '67, 283 Chevelle, Fram part number FV100, it looks like this-

Here's those pics. It sucks I had to compromise from my original design but I tend to rack up the miles on my truck and constantly adding oil and replacing oil fouled plugs once a month isn't my idea of a low maintenance ride.

Not very noticeable overall-



Now that I have this fixed I can get back on other things like the rust repair on my replacement cab and getting my points style distributor ready. I picked up these old but unopened Valley Forge plug wires today at a swap meet for $4.

As I alluded... the drawback to this method is if you wish to add oil, you'll be popping a v.cover to do so. If I get what I want, I'll pay that price.

Advancements (for lack of a better description). I already have a brand new Performer Air Gap intake which is as good or better than any nostalgia piece but it lacks the oil fill tube/breather (which I'm not 100% fond of). But, I like the no-holes look so it requires figuring out an 'end-around' on the venting issue.

I've considered baffles & plumbing on the back side of the v.covers but still seeking options I'm potentially not aware of......
