Is my 87' stock seat supposed to latch?
I have a 1987 V10 Silverado with the stock seat in it. Right now, I can grab the back and it just folds forward. Was it originally supposed to latch and release with the pull up lever like most trucks? If I pull the seat forward, I can see a thin metal "lever" on both sides that rotates on the seat hinge. They are both rotated so they are "sitting" toward the bottom of the seat and if they are not a latch, I don't know the purpose of them is. I was just wondering if somehow they got disengaged from the seat and fell down.
Any advice? Thanks |

Hmm, I was wondering about this too... my 78 latched but I noticed my 87 never even had one. Interesting.

Re: Is my 87' stock seat supposed to latch?
81-87 seats don't have a lever on the back to unlatch them.
They only latch when a pendulum swings forward and engages the teeth that are part of the seat hinge. That should only happen on a really sudden stop or a frontal collision. Your seat is working as designed.

Correct. It's called an "inertial latch". K

Re: Is my 87' stock seat supposed to latch?
My father's 87 does not latch and he's the 2nd owner and he knew the 1st owner so the seat was original.

Re: Is my 87' stock seat supposed to latch?
Just to follow up on this one a bit:
When I was working on my truck last night I noticed you can actually see the pendulum and corresponding parts on the seat. Here you can see the "sawtooth", or projections that the pendulum catches on: ...and if you look down inside you can see the pendulum itself. (Here you are looking at the edge of it). It swings forward based on the inertia and grabs those sawtooths on the hinge portion during an aggressive stop or collision: FWIW
