Q for DFW members
Here is the deal. My brother and I just replaced the motor in his 85 short wide. Realy nice truck, just no power. Needless to say we put in a 350 instead of another 305.
We went to a wrecking yard and found some great non-air injection 2.25 manifolds and 3" y-pipe from a TBI sub for $35. He had a 3" Catco converter and flowmaster put on (sounds great). Bought a used non-EGR Performer and he has a new M4ME q-jet on the way. The motor is a .030 over 8.5-1 350 with a summit 204/214 cam. My question is what do you guys think about this thing passing emmissions? I'm pretty sure it will pass the sniffer test even without the EGR, but I could be wrong. We left the huge stock air cleaner and painted the intake black so unless they know where to look for the missing EGR it looks completely stock. What do you guys think? If he has to we'll put a EGR Performer on it when the time comes. Does he have a chance? Now we have to swap those 2.73's for some 3.42's, damn what was GM thinking! Thanks, James |

if your in dallas county, your most likley not gonna pass if you don't have the egr, and smog pump and charcole canister, ect, if it was originaly equiped that way, unless you have a hook up somewhere. i'm in dallas county too and i registered my truck to a p.o. box i have in brazos county and alot of the places in brazos county don't care about checking everything.

I agree w/ low 84! Even if you found a way to pass the sniffer test, you wouldnt pass the visual

Ditto. I have a '75 and I had one inpsector fail me because I didn't have the EGR. So, I just went to another shop. Dallas, Tarrant, Collin, and Harris counties are the strictest for emissions testing. If you don't live in one of those counties, you may be able to find a shop that will pass you. Good luck! Where are you? Your Personal info (left hand side of your post) doesn't list your location.

The truck is registered in Denton county, but I think they are pretty much all the same around here now, the inspection station has to have the yellow check mark I believe.
There are no brackets and no plugs in the manifolds for a smog pump. The charcoal canister is still in place and "mostly" hooked up. So it can be expected that the inspector will know where to look for the EGR. Oh well, he just got it done in Feb so we have some time to look for an intake. What about the sniffer test? The tired 305 passed with flying colors, not even close to failing. Will a good tuned engine with a good cat but without a smog pump and with or without EGR still pass? I have heard both ways. We might put an EGR intake back on but the smog pump is never going back on! James |

if the engine is new(er) and runs real clean, then retard the timing some and lean the carb some and get it sniffer tested while its hot, then there is a good chance it will pass, but yes the inspector will know where to look for the egr if they do the visual inspection

I agree that they're going to look for it. I passed mine with visual with no problems but it's also a 79. I don't need a cat either. Here's what I did to pass sniffer.
Change oil, filter and spark plugs. Change or clean (if K&N style) air filter. Replace PCV valve. Retard timing to about 6-8 and retune carb to be leaner but not too lean. You can fail for this as well. Make sure to get the engine warmed up good. I let mine idle while waiting on the inspector to finish up teh previous one. One more thing to save you some $$$ is to go before and ask the inpsector to see if you need anything to pass visually before you even give him your DL and Ins. card. This way you can see if you have a lenient one or not. I luckily got a easy to slide one but the sniffer isn't friendly at all.

They told me our trucks would have to practically smoke the place up before they failed the sniff test. I have specs on inspection if any body is interested.

Actuallly Texas in itself isn't bad about emmissions at all except if you live in one of the few counties that actually do the testing. Really just the big cities.
