cab smells like gas??

ive had my 62 for a month or two now..ive noticed the cab smells like gas quite a bit...ive heard somewhere this is typical of these trucks due to vents.....should i be worried??

It shouldn't smell like gas all the time, except for maybe out in the sun on a really hot day or something. First thing I'd check is the filler hose for dry-rot and cracking.

I had the same problem... my solution was to relocate the tank out back.

I was thinking of relocating the gas tank just to gain a little room behind the seat. What kinda tank did you use and where did you mount it?

i thought maybe a leak at the sending unit...hard to tell if its just a hot day...its been hot every day lol...

I used a 80 chevy van tank. Do a search there's a lot of info. Make sure you get one that doesn't stick up to high. I think I show both types on my thread.Every once in awhile my 64 smells like gras.

Just loosen it up and put some rv sealer around it. Or get one of those pine tree things that hang from your mirror.

I went with the typical blazer tank conversion like all the vendors sell, except I got mine cheaper on e-bay. It goes under the bed where the spare is.
The conversion is really easy, the hardest part being the fill tube and where/how to mount your cap.
Overall, I'm not too fond of the tank. It works well, but it hangs a little lower than I'd like it too, and it just feels cheap, but that's probably because I went with the polyethylene tank. I would definitely recommend the metal one to anyone doing the conversion. A metal tank would also give you the option of moving the filler neck where you want. Oh, and the sending unit that came with mine went bad soon after I installed it. (luckily I kept the bed wood out)

You can kinda see in this pic how low it hangs. I just put my gascap on top of the rear fender, but having a fleetside makes things a bit more complicated.

You should paint some thread on it. It would look like your spare. It does'nt really look to bad. If you had a real bumper you would even notice it. I want to get a roll pan for my 64. Is your truck paint or primer I like it.

im just doing a fuel cell mounted to the back of the cab/ bed of truck. im prob going to do a 40 gallon that spans the entire bed width in the front because its my honda-hauler and both my truck and my quad run on the same octane haha what do you guys think? not to hijack the thread

I had a '71 and it leaked fumes from the sending unit....could very well be.

My 65 smelled really bad then i replaced that thick rubber seal on the cab where the gas cap goes. I have never smelled gas since. Maybe i got lucky but it worked for me and it was a lot less work then moving the tank

i loosened the sending unit and put some sealant in there..hopefully that 'll fix it somewhat...hot as all get out in that cab..prob lost 15 lbs in sweat lol

Hey on my 61 the neck of the gas tank was soldered to the tank and that was where the gas fumes were coming from. It cracked just a little and thats all it took. I changed the filler neck rubber and still had the smell. Later I found that the crack was the cause. Good Luck!

Neil,

If that doesn't do it....

Rub your hand around the rubber hose connecting the filler tube to the tank. You can reach it even if you can't see it. If your hand smells strongly of gas the rubber tube needs to be replaced or the clamps replaced. Gas sloshes up there when the tank is full and a little leaks out giving the gas smell.

Screw type radiator hose clamps work a lot better than the OE.
