Re: 67 Barn Find or Chicken Dinner

Does anyone know if the 327 block is toast -- Can I use a 350 block and change the other parts over ? Or is the a better way of doing this motor. I am praying that the block will be usable. I would love to bring the old 327 back to life. I think its time to BBQ some CHICKEN!!!!

Re: 67 Barn Find or Chicken Dinner

Probably not. Up until 68, 327's used a small journal forged crank.

After 68 (and when the 350 was born...) they went to a large journal crank... so, if you want to keep your crank, you'll more than likely need to find a pre-68 327 block.

Is the 327 in your truck a small journal? From the pics, I took it as a large journal.

Re: 67 Barn Find or Chicken Dinner

How would I tell if it is a large or small journal crank without taking it apart ? If there is a way someone please let me know. Thanks

Re: 67 Barn Find or Chicken Dinner

Look by the distributor and see if there is a PCV hole in the block.

This is a pic of a small journal, and you can see the PCV hole.

Also, if you have the intake off you will see the PCV vent. It's about the size of a stock ignition coil laying on it's side towards the back.

Hey Vectorit.....Thanks for the photo, it really helped. I have that exact vent on the back of the block. So I do have a small journal 327 . Thanks again. Jim

There are small journal blocks left. Sure, not as common, but I've seen them in passing. Talk to someone who knows there stuff. Maybe you can bore a 283 block safely???

Re: 67 Barn Find or Chicken Dinner

Finally found a 327 motor that is coming out of a totaled 68 truck in the town next to mine. Picking it up for $200 doll-hairs on Saturday. So I guess the fun begins on Saturday pulling the blown motor out and swapping the new one in its place. I will get some picts posted up on Saturday evening.

Re: 67 Barn Find or Chicken Dinner

Well after all the delay in getting a different motor for the chicken dinner truck things are starting to progress. First I acquired a 327 from a local junk yard. Got it home and was ready to swap over all the parts and get her running. Popped off the valve covers and RUST. The motor was no good. Called them up to see if they could help me out. They responded a few weeks later with a running 305 out of 88 truck. I finally picked that up and thats what will be going into the truck for now. At a later date I will look at rebuilding an original 327 to get her back to where she was.

Re: 67 Barn Find or Chicken Dinner
