Mix and Match - 68 Chevy fenders and hood with a 71 GMC Grill
I've searched, I read that you can use 68 Chevy Fenders with the later GMC stuff.
Can you use 68 fenders and hood with a later GMC grill? |

good question, I would talk to rokcrln since I have seen him modify a few hoods to fit on newer trucks.

There's 2 answers... both yes and no.
For a nuts and bolts simple job, I say no. The fenders WILL work, they are the same. The hood though, you'll need a 67-68 grill top bar. You have to drill the rivits that hold the top bar to the grill and then install the 67/68 unit. Then, you'll need a 67/68 hood latch assembly. Then it'll work. |

Well,I`m not trying to be a nazi(and you know that).Mickey said it would be easy so I wanted to be sure it was.Cuz,simple can end up hard by taking the long road.
heyMickey.just watch for guys swapping 67/68 (GMCs) to Chevys. The disease isn`t that rare.

Re: Mix and Match - 68 Chevy fenders and hood with a 71 GMC Grill
I did this to my 69 gmc, all i changed was the grill top bar and the hood. Is a 67-68 gmc hood latch different from 69-72? I dident change mine, had to run the plunger way out though. I scored the top bar from a board member.

Exactly, I dont have a pic of mine but heres one i found online. You take your grill and fender moldings off drill out the rivits for the chrome top bar and rivit on the steel top bar. |

Or, for a lower profile on the '69-72 hood, you could pie-cut it. Seems like the most you can take out on the front end is 1.5 inches, and that is to keep it from contacting the top of the radiator support.

Re: Mix and Match - 68 Chevy fenders and hood with a 71 GMC Grill
True or another option would be to cut off the leading edge of a 67-68 Hood, I really like the look on 69-72 chevys but on a gmc you might as well just change the grill top bar since thats all that needs changed to run the early hood.

Re: Mix and Match - 68 Chevy fenders and hood with a 71 GMC Grill
Yes.If you look at the front it is slopped like the hoods and the later ones are steeper, like the hoods. But,your`s works fine?I`ve wondered if it really mattered.

That's what I am going to do. I can't weld sheet metal all that well.
