The 327 ?

In this new truck, it's got a 327, mild cam, holly carb. I've had a 350 in the past. Will i like the 327 ? Or will I be able to tell the difference.

I`m building my`67 swb with what I have on a low budget.But,I found a 327 and just had to have it.I already had a 350 from a`71.They are as great a motor as the 350 with added vintage cool factor.They have different dynamics and yes they like to scream,without giving up bottom end.

350: 4.00 bore x 3.48 stroke

327: 4.00 bore x 3.25 stroke

The 327 likes to spin more than the 350. My brother had a '68 C10 with a factory 327. After a rebuild/hop-up that thing was a blast. At 7000 rpm it made you grit your teeth - but it never came apart.

I wish I had pictures of the looks on people's faces when this beat-up old truck came screaming past them with that hairy-cammed 327.

IIRC, Chevy changed from 327 to 350 to gain back a bit of torque that was lost when they first began choking down engines with the earliest forms of pollution control. I've had a few 327s in different states of tune. It's a really sweet engine!

Had a 327 in my 65 elky and it was a screamer....if set up "CORRECT" you will be happy with it..

Yeah,all cubes went bigger to compensate for choking motors down with superficial emissions equipment.Then,they just sucked more gas which meant more emissions.

Also ive been told many times that 327 blocks had a higher nickel content that and the cylinder walls are thicker. The early ones had a small journal crank and the later ones have a large journal same as a 350.

The bore is the same as 350s,so the cylinder walls are the same thickness.The large journal 327 I have from a`68 truck is the same block as the SS350 and Z/28 Camaros.

In the realm of vintage Detroit power the only small block I would prefer over the 327 would be a DZ302.....but given the fact that I'll $h!t purple twinkies before I score one of those- I'll stick to making fond memories with the 327 in my SWB project.

did the large journal crank come with a center bolt for the harmonic balancer??

and if so are they interchangeable? or do you have to line bore the crank journals?

or should i just go and get my small journal drilled?????

i want to keep my 327, i just would like a little more compatibility when it comes to balancers..

Not to knock the 327, but having a shorter stroke will move the powerband UP, which unfortunately means LESS torque on the very bottom end. All things being equall, a longer stroke equalls more low end torque. Once again, I'm not knocking the 327. I have run both in the same vehicle, and was deffinitely able to tell a difference in low end torque.

Are you all in favor of the 327 because of a) reliability b)functioning c)performance? As from what I hear there is no real definitive reason as to why the 327 is good, other then simply "because I like it, and so should you" Not trying to start a war, I too have a 327 and am curious as to what makes it so favored by all of you. I know pretty much nothing about engines, so bare with me lol

If you want an engine to turn high rpms, the shorter stroke has a better "rod length to stroke ratio". The 302...even better. So if you want to turn 7000 rpm for long lengths of time, a short stroke is what you want. If you want to maximize torque at a low rpm (which is very desireable on the street) you want as much stroke as possible. (but will have to trade off high rpm horsepower) It all depends on WHERE you want your engine to make power, and WHAT your intended usage will be. We all would like an engine that spins to 7500 and makes tire shreading torque at 1500. (If anyone figures out how to do this PLEASE let me know! LOL!) Everything is a compromise so to speak.

Chevy made 327s in a wide variety of configurations, and they could be as different as chalk & cheese. They were the performance engine of choice when I was growing up, and I've owned a couple nice ones, so they have always been just a bit special to me. Having said that, they may be unable to hold a candle to today's crop of SBCs, whether factory or modified.
