Re: "FRAME OFF" Has Begun - Wish Me Luck! - Pics

Thanks Conroe!

Been making a little headway….A lot of cleaning, repairing and repainting of tons of parts and hardware…..Also, went through the Instrument Panel and Steering Column….I wanted so bad to buy a tilt column but I had to draw the line somewhere with the budget and with a couple spendy purchases coming up (Wiring harness & Vintage Air) the tilt column got cut!

Did some repairs on the inner fenders….and learned that JB weld is probably the best “filler” that can handle the oven heat when getting powder-coated

Inner Fenders getting ready to get bolted up

Tailgate now hung….A little disappointed to still see a very slight bow on the lower portion of the inside of the gate…..Outside looks fine!

Instrument Panel all cleaned up with a new lens & bezel….

New Power Booster from CPP and rebuilt steering column in and complete...and my first "Oops"...scratch there on the firewall

Removed the core support and actually replaced it as I found some damage after I got it powder-coated and is was bugging the crap out of me…So another board member actually traded me for a perfect one….so I was only out the cost of powder-coating again…..Also, a look at the “All Terrains” I picked up...in lieu of the “Muds”….

A look inside the cab of what I got done so far (steering wheel is obviously temporary)....I also got the fuel tank installed....Interesting note, when I was cleaning out the tank I found about a 30" long piece of rubber hose down in it....Sounds like a siphoning job gone bad!...LOL

Thanks guys....That Blue has always been one of my favorites....Not sure I've seen any other trucks painted that exact color (I'm sure they are out there though).....But a lot of 69 Camaros were painted that color!

what size tires did you go with?

are you going to coat the insides of the front fenders? you'll see that area won't you?

I just bumped it up one size to the 31x10.5x15....I think that is about the max for the 6" wide rim.....Later I may still go to the Ralley's....those 32x11.5 like you scored are a nice size for stock height!

Its actually painted in there...just not clear-coated....that pic with the flash makes it look like primer...buts its coated the same blue!

On another note....Inline Tube scored another big fat ZERO from me.....This time it was the fuel line that goes thru the cab from the tank....Completely, 100% bent wrong (almost mirrored).....not even close!.....Screw it, I just cleaned up the old one with steel wool and re-installed it....I'm done dealing with those clowns!

Thanks my man...I appreciate it!....Though I'm trying my best and I'm really satisfied with everything to this point, the pics may give it a bit more justice than what it really is (like pics usually do!) or maybe Its because I know every little flaw..LOL....

But I have gained a new appreciation for some of the 'Concourse" restorations I see out there.....Some guys must have a million man hours in some of those builds!

Thanks a bunch...I appreciate it....

Started working on the vent windows and door internals…..Made it about 30 mins on the vent windows before I threw them back in the tub they came from…These things look like a small nightmare (especially mine as they are not even chrome)….I mean you gotta drill out rivets just to replace seals….sweet design…NOT!.....I’ll get back to em later….unless someone convinces me that the aftermarket chrome complete assemblies are worth a crap…..So far the consensus looks to be 50/50 at best!

Did get the door latches cleaned up and painted…they're ready to be installed!

Wait - does powder coat actually stick to JB Weld?

Nice project, btw.

Re: "FRAME OFF" Has Begun - Wish Me Luck! - Pics

my blue is rustoleum....
no bull****.. rustoleum blue metal flake.. IIRC i did a paint chip.. talked to "dirty larry" on the forums (who has the same metal flake)
and the paint code is the same as a 97 montanna mini van..
that's the only code i have seen come close..
with cam swap and all the "goodies" and a few mistakes (opps!) im at 1300 for the entire front end/ clutch motor rebuild..

and thatnks for "watching" i appreciate it! all teh pictures begin page 6

I have had two different powdercoaters both tell me that "JB Quick" is by far the best "filler" to use...now they both did say that it really should only be used in small amounts just to finish off small repairs or grind marks....I used it on my inner fenders where i did some repair and where I plugged a couple quarter size holes....and the powder-coating came out perfect in those areas!

Wow...thats crazy...for sure a far cry from a minivan...LOL....Only $1300?....damn thats a grip of work for little dough!....I guess thats what you get when you can rebuild the motor yourself.....I have rebuilt only two engines in my life and only one was a success......I''ll give it a go again someday....just not today.....It is very cool that your woman gets involved in it with you....I wish mine would....mostly, cause I'm always in need of another pair of hands

Cool, thanks for that link....I may have to give that a go....looks very doable and would save me a bunch of cash....My one worry would be how well the paint would hold up?....I've painted quite a few plastic parts especially on my old Camaros and I still have a hard time getting it to stand the test of time!

well contact the guy who posted it, he's got all the answers he has a couple of postings like that, but remember when painting plastic peices you should AT LEASET scuff them with a red 3M scouring pad...(or steel wool etc)

but that posting has been around for a while so he might have some uto date pictures..

Thanks man!...yea the hours really add up fast and with usually little to show for the effort....but little by little you get there...Just wish I had more hours each week to put into it....Right now the progress is hardly showing as I am hitting tons of road blocks....ie; lack of parts, wrong parts, broken parts...etc...

Oh yea..Tip of the week: Do not try and fit your arm inside the door shell to retrive a dropped part....Use a telescoping magnet tool .......Arm got stuck pretty bad .......LOL

Re: "FRAME OFF" Has Begun - Wish Me Luck! - Pics

Well, I jumped back onto the vent windows....Actually traded my repop inner grille that I didn't need for a set of really nice Chrome wings....only swapped the handles from mine as they were a bit nicer....So, I got them pulled apart tonight and after a couple hours of sweating and quite a bit of swearing, I got the first one done....

Only screwed up one pivot rivet....So, on the second one I chose to remove the bracket rivets instead of the pivot rivet as they only give you two pivot rivets in the repair kit.....I'll get the second one assembled in the morning......overall not really that bad once you understand how it all goes together....The lack of a vise kinda hurt me for setting rivets but I improvised...The dishsoap tip I read about is a must for getting the seal in the groove...thanks to whoever you are

Ok...glad thats over....they came out really nice...A little hard to latch, probably take a little while to get broken in!
