Should I get rid of my truck?

Well im thinking about getting rid of it. I know I will regret it later on, but my motor is about gone and thats gonna take some money and I just don't have the drive I used to, to go out and work on it, And im wanting something a little more reliable. Im thinking about getting either a newer chevy truck or a newer ls or lt camaro or a firebird

Just thought I would get a opinion from you guys, its kind of a hard choice

Yeah I say get rid of it. That way when you are older you will have a story to tell about the one you should never have let go...

Re: Should I get rid of my truck?

Just the fact that you are unsure, just goes to show that you will regret it.

If you didn't care, you'd have done the deal already and thought nothin of it.

I had a 68 elCamino that was solid, and a perfect easy resto candidate. But I got tired of it taking my time n' money away from my burb project, and the apartment I was living in was not anyplace to store it. So here I am years later and wishin I woulda figured out a way to keep it, and I drool over every 68 elCamino I see and wonder if the owner would sell it to me... I keep sayin "one of these days I will get another".

you aren't going to get many other responses from this crowd, but you do what you feel you must. I say spend the money and get it running better, then it's a win-win situation...

spend $2K on a crate motor and you'll have it for the next 25 years with no issues.. that's about 5 newer truck payments...

Keep the truck AND buy another newer truck or Camaro. Can never have too many cool rides.

I have put way more money into newer trucks then my old trucks. I should have just invested in the old stuff and been done with it!

Re: Should I get rid of my truck?

I have been working on my c-10 for a few months now. It is now mechancially new with all mostly parts with a lifetime warranty. I have done all the work myself. And I dont have near as much into it as I would in a new car that will just be a lot more expensive to fix and I will not be able to fix a lot of it either. In the long run the new stuff is not cheaper by a long shot.

Re: Should I get rid of my truck?

Is it worth some good cash as it sits? If so sell it. Unless it holds sentimental value. You can't buy that sentimental truck back very often.
You can always buy another classic when funds permit. I think each classic vehicle that is sold is a stepping stone to one that is bigger and better. Each one teaches you a little more about what you want in a classic vehicle.
Who knows, maybe your next one will be another 72 2wd SWB, but maybe it will have a more solid body, or maybe a better drivetrain, or more options. There are a lot of these trucks out there.

That being said, it's tough to beat the cost of these trucks. They are cheap to fix, and easy to work on. And, the insurance is usually MUCH cheaper than that of a newer vehicle.

Re: Should I get rid of my truck?

I have a newer vehicle too. A power seat track for it just cost me 875 dollars! My transmission for a full rebuild with hardened parts and a shift kit for the truck cost 571 bucks!

Re: Should I get rid of my truck?

Well Allen, I would think about the fact that no matter what you have in the driveway, someone in your family will run into it.

Kidding aside, I have never regretted owning my truck. It is something you can make into a one-of-a-kind vehicle that you can enjoy for years that no-one else has.

Anyone can buy a newer camaro or newer truck.

Re: Should I get rid of my truck?

The motors in these trucks are replaceable.

I mean, you`ll end up not being able to get much for a truck with an about gone motor and you`ll spend money on a newer vehicle that will end up with piddley problems that, hopefully, you can diagnose and repair yourself.Buy a Goodwrench motor and be good to go.

I agree. The truck I got has a decent body and frame but mechanically was tired. The engine was a 350 but it had no compression on one cylinder and was shot. We took it out and sent it to the engine builder. All he could reuse was the block. Its now an all new motor painted, assembled and delivered with Dart heads and a RV cam for 1600 bucks and it sounds incredible. Total rebuild on the tranny 571 bucks. So for 2200 dollars I have a brand new really nice drivetrain. Replaced the rest of the mechanical parts for 950. You really cannot beat that. 3100 dollars for a truck that is basically mechanically new.

Re: Should I get rid of my truck?

I get the urge for a new one from time to time and I start shopping for what I wont and get tired of looking and give up for a bit then I start liking my old ride again and I can't remember why I thought I needed a new truck note. Don't do anything hasty, give it a little time; unless it's a matter of survival. You were attracted to you're old truck for a reason be sure you're over it. A newer truck isn't always cheaper. Start saving what you'd like to spend every month on a truck note and in a few months you'll have the money to rebuild or replace the engine you have.

Re: Should I get rid of my truck?

my 72 suburban 3/4 ton 2wd is my sports car.....at least until i get my 86 dodge aries wagon sleeper project done. will be putting in a 406sbc in front of that 3 on the tree and going to a 4.10 instead of the 4.56. i get my chevy v8, but in something more practical than a sports car....insurance and registration is cheap and it will haul people and trailers.....something you just can't do much of with a corvette or camaro. but do what makes you happy. i'll probably have my truck 'till they take away my driver's license and put me in a retirement home. and they will have to drag me in kicking and screaming when i go crawling underneath to work on it, walker and all.....LOL

Re: Should I get rid of my truck?

I don't understand any of this. You would have to pry my cold, dead hands from the steering wheel to get my 70! GEEZE! Rebuild the engine and get on with this wonderful interest! Gives you a good chance to paint the block and detail the engine compartment.
