Sure beats licenceplates.tv. They want 80 bucks to do one plate!

That is a terrific idea. I like the way it came out, but I also wonder if the LEO is going to have an issue with it...

Will your wife do my nails...I mean plates?

Looks good. It`s hard to tell with black.I filed a penny down into a dime in shop class so I could call for a ride home from basketball practice once (or 30 times).

Re: My new Ca. black lic. plate and frame

I don't see any reason that it would be illegal. The content of the plate stays the same, the vehicle is capable of identification the same... I am going with a no harm defense.

How much does a "correct" black plate sell for?

Lookin good Rene! For some reason, I doubt you will have any "legal" problems with it.

Re: My new Ca. black lic. plate and frame

I really want black plates but also don't trouble with the fuzz. I though about having Ray Ray here in San Diego or License Plates TV make me up a pair of black plates using my current 7 digit plate number but the old black plates only came with 6 digits. My fear is that some sharp cop may see that and nail me. Most won't but you never know. Also, having a 7 digit black plate is a dead giveaway. Better to have only 6 digits. Could also order a current personalized 6 digit plate and then have it remade in black. According to Ca Vehicle Code section 5004.1, you have to use original 6 digit black plates. Cannot paint current plates black or have any shop make you 7 digit black plates. My original plan was to find some "cleared" originals, have them registered by the DMV and then have new ones made by Ray Ray for $180 a pair. Does anyone else have a better/cheaper way that is still legal?

Also, C/10 King, what paint and color did you use?

Nope. Why pay Ray Ray $180? Restore them yourself for cheaps. I did and they look fantastic.

Black is black (semi-gloss is my preference) and I used Testors model paint for the yellow.

I guess my question is really what did the DMV use. C/10 King seems to be using gloss black for the base. Is that correct? Or is semi gloss correct? Also, what is the correct yellow the DMV used?

Re: My new Ca. black lic. plate and frame

I have a nice pair of black plates, just hanging in my garage. I know I gave $300 for a nice set of restored 'Pacific Wonderland' here in Oregon. What are these worth?

Re: My new Ca. black lic. plate and frame

I see pairs of them going for over $100 on Ebay, if they are "clear".

I do not know. If you like the look of gloss, go for it. I just happen to prefer semi-gloss. I see lots of different looking yellows on the plates, and after fading and 40 years, it ain't gonna matter.
