Inside doorskin rust
Greetings, I found some rust in the inside door skins of the 72. How'd you folks take care of it? Thanks

Re: Inside doorskin rust
If it isn't rusted thru, clean it up and POR 15 it from the inside. No rust issues ever again.

Re: Inside doorskin rust
if it is what most ppl in cali call rust, just put the door panel back on and give it another 40 years to make a pit in the metal.
So, without the added sarcasm... how bad is it? Is it a light brown powder, or is it scales and pits? Last edited by Longhorn Man; 09-13-2009 at 07:55 PM. |

Re: Inside doorskin rust
Yeah there is a big difference between " Cali Rust " and " North East Rust " or shall I say " North East Rot "

Re: Inside doorskin rust
Not all Cali trucks are rust free. Come out to the coast. Most vehicles there look like they were towed in from back east.

Re: Inside doorskin rust
Door skins are one of the "easiest" jobs at a body shop. If the truck is in nice shape, I'd have the skin replaced. If not, you could always coat the inside of the shin with POR-15 and wait for any more rust that may pop through the outside of the skin.
I'm in the middle of replacing the inner door panel sheet metal right now. Not that hard if you have a mig welder or know someone who does. Rick |

Re: Inside doorskin rust
Without photos, just going by your description, I would just scuff it with a green scotch brite clean it with soap and water, shoot some brake clean in there, let it dry, and either shoot some paint, or coat it with POR15.
It doesn't sound very seriouse at all. |

Re: Inside doorskin rust
I used the scotch brite pad myself, but I got the red ones from the paint shop. They are a little more sturdier and coarser too.
I'd find a kid or someone who has small arms to get to the harder spots to reach, otherwise expect to get a little cut up on the metal. I also used a shop vac to get all the dust, dirt, leaves, etc. out from the bottom of the door. Since that stuff is a moisture magnet, and will cause future rust problems.

Re: Inside doorskin rust
We do get rust in California. I am afraid to take my door panels off. Here is a pic of rusted fender from a 64 a-body. I think the best way is to get them acid dipped. I will do that soon.

Thats not rust. Here in MN you might just wash that off with a garden hose before painting. JK. For that fender I would wire wheel or use a scotch pad to knock the stuff off, brush on some of the acid stuff from DuPont or PPG, prep that with the instructions on the bottle, hit it with epoxy, and forget about it.

Re: Inside doorskin rust
I do understand that there are cars and trucks in so-cal with rust. I also understand that a car/truck that lived within 2 miles of the Pacific for 40 years will most likely have it. I have even seen a beautiful GMC truck in so-cal with holes in the floors.
However, 99% of the so-cal guys (that I have seen on here) who complain about rust on there rides have a rusty color dusting over virgin metal. By comparison, I had a car that was so rusted when i was in high school, that it broke in half. LITERALLY. Granted, my duke boy immitation 4 to 7 times a day over the rail road tracks didn't help, but still, it failed due to rust. You see cabs on trucks here held on by the steering column and wire harnesses... and gravity, you see bed sides rust away from the bed floors and end up basicly falling off. Even 5 to 8 year old cars with brake lines and fuel lines bust due to rust. All this you'll see ON THE ROAD. And cantral Ohio isn't even all that bad. Mn, Il, In, Mi, parts of PA and NY are worse than here. |

Clean well. Apply some Rust Bullet. Never worry about it again.

Re: Inside doorskin rust
Brake cleaner will evaporate before you start welding, so no danger there!! Unless you start to weld while you're spraying it!!!! LOL!!
