Re: Project: Blank Slate
Well boy's... on my 16,000th post I had to come back to the project build thread I've loved creating so much.
Here's to the board and all the members that I've been fortunate enough to meet. This place truly is a family. Below is a quick shot from the "family reunion" this past weekend at the Midwest All Truck Nat's. The shot was featured in an online article completed by our very own Revoh. I was fortunate enough to come home with 3rd place with my truck. Hopefully after posting a little more work (and updates in this thread), I will be able to increase my odds... Thanks again to all the members of this site, you guy's are the best!

I just re-read the entire thread to make sure I didn't miss anything since I'm in the process of dropping the front of the S/C 68. I'm still trying to figure out why you trimmed the the bumpstop bracket? Is it necessary? I have 73-87 a-arms and I'm using McGaughey's 2 1/2" dropped spindles, do I need to do this to mine? Thanks for the great pictures and write-up. R/

Re: Project: Blank Slate
Hey Rob,... that was my doing.
I have always trimmed them off. Some people remove the entire bumpstop/steering stop bracket. I like to leave the steering stop. I guess I do it just to add that extra bit of clearance. Plus if you need a bumpstop I like using the Energy Suspension bumpstops instead of cutting the stock one down.

Re: Project: Blank Slate
This is my '69 swb with a 3" drop spring and a 2.5" drop spindle.
This shows how much clearance is there.

Re: Project: Blank Slate
So you're trying to gain clearance between the a-frame and the crossmember? I was thinking it was a wheel iclearance issue. I'm just running 2 1/2" spindles and a 2" spring. Do you think their will be any problems?

Re: Project: Blank Slate
You shouldn't have to trim anything on the bumpstop.
Whenever I lower a 67-87 truck I always trim the lower control arm around the lower balljoint area (for 15x8 ralley wheel clearance) and trim up the bumpstops. It's a habit, I guess. I think the rubber bumpstop needs to be completely removed, so why keep the metal bracket? Just the way I do it. You can leave the entire bracket with just a 2" drop spring. But I would still trim the sides of the lower control arm, if you ever plan on running a 15" wheel with more than 3.5" of backspace.

Re: Project: Blank Slate
Rob,... these pics are showing the opposite a-arms.
(one is the left and one is the right,... but you get the idea). The blue tape shows the area that I trim for wheel clearance. You can also see the before and after bumpstop "trim area".

Re: Project: Blank Slate
How much do you take off for the wheel clearance? Do you have a before and after picture of this area?

Re: Project: Blank Slate
Ha.
The picture with the blue tape is the after pic. I mainly trim back the front and rear lip of the a-arm I will get a better pic.

Re: Project: Blank Slate
I trim the red area. Plus the same amount of lip on the rear side of the a-arm.
When I'm done,... I check it by mounting the wheel, (at ride height), turning lock to lock, checking for any clearance issues. Like I said,... this is mainly for 15" wheels with more than 3.5" of backspacing.
