Switch from manual to auto transmission

I've got a 68 Chevy 2 wheel drive 1/2 ton truck with a manual 3 on the tree. I want to swap to a auto probably a 350, will the existing cross member work with that trans? Also some one told me the dive shaft will work, any thoughts?

Re: Switch from manual to auto transmission

your 3 speed doesn't have a crossmember, just mounts to the bellhousing.
You'll need;
Crossmember
tranny
torque converter
speedo cable
tranny mount
most likely driveshaft or mods to yours
Kickdown cable
cooler lines
shifter linkages
auto column
radiator with trans cooler

Re: Switch from manual to auto transmission

the crossmember that the bellhousing bolts to will need to be removed (8 rivits), an automatic trans cross member will need to be found, if you use an 9 inch tail housing T350 you can use your driveshaft "I think" just measure before you buy the automatic, there are 3 different lengths 6,9, and 12 in tailhousings. good luck!!

Re: Switch from manual to auto transmission

I think that the last item Longhorn meant was a radiator with the trans cooler!

Re: Switch from manual to auto transmission

Welcome to the board. To answer your ? yes there is an aftermarket X member. I would look on the parts board for a good used one, probably cheaper. heres a link to ECE.

Re: Switch from manual to auto transmission

I have a LS motor with a 4L60-E trans. Had to move new motor back 2 inches for newer single piece straight driveshaft and just used a piece of angle iron for a trans member, no problems so far and free, C Chanel will work too. If u wanna use the old driveshaftll it'll have to be cut, maybe find one off a caprice or similer like I did about the right length.
