elec. fuel pump suggestions needed
ok im a couple days out from completing my frame & suspension rebuild, about to order alum. fuel cell from summitt or jegs while im at it converting over to elec. fuel pump anyone with good luck on particular brand(s). i think i can figure out the hose &fittings needed, mounting tank doesnt phase me my main concern is i want a reliable pump without all that whinning, it sounds cool at first but after a while it gets old. my cousin's 383 powered s10 drag racer is noise as hell, you can hear his even with the truck running and hes running long tubes w/ flowmaster race mufflers, gooooodddd goddd!

I have a Mallory 110 pump on my truck and it's pretty quiet. I haven't had any problems out of it either. I noticed that when you deadhead this pump it gets a tad bit louder. I'm running a return style regulator with mine so it keeps it's usual low, barely audible hum.

The 110 'kit' comes with a deadhead regulator (you don't have a return line to the tank like in a return style regulator) The Malloy fuel pumps are BUNCHES quieter than the Holleys. I've ran them on the street and on the strip for a long time and only had a couple failures.
I ran a single 110and dedhead regulator up to 580HP with an-6 line,,, and can PROVE IT. You don't have to go stupid overkill to feed even a serious motor, BUT,,,,,, if you have plans of any future go faster faster faster goodies and thinking above 600HP,, step up to the plate with an-8 right off the bat will save you $'s. Above 600-650HP I'd highly suggest a Mallory 250 alcohol pump (the alcohol pumps are hard anodized to fight corrosion is the only big difference) and the Mallory 4307M return style regulator. Probably the best out there right now.

I personally like the Aeromotive A1000 w/ return regulator.
I have also found out never hard mount your pump it just makes the noise worse. I install rubber isolators on all my pumps. super quiet. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/AEI-11101/ |

By deadhead, I meant running the fuel line with no return, in other words, the fuel deadends at the regulator when the correct pressure is built up. Also, I have my Mallory mounted directly to the frame and it's still not that bad. So I'd agree the Mallory pumps are nowhere near as loud as the Holley pumps(even with the isolators).

I am a fan of Aeromotive as well. I haven't used anything else, but the aero's are somewhat quite and a few of my friends have switch their failing/loud holley's for the aeromotives and haven't looked back since.
I also agree with Marv D. For the couple of extra dollars run the 8an and never worry about whether it will support your motor or not.

ok what all should i need to purchase to do an elec. fuel pump install. running 750 holley dp vac sec if that helps, will be using summitt alum cell 20 gal.

something else you might want to take into acount with the mallory's and the holley's is that they are rotary vein fuel pumps any amount of moisture for a sustained amount of time will cause the veins to freeze up and you will lose fuel pressure or the pump will just quit all togeather, the aeromotives dont have this problem but are considerably more exspensive, and a MOST DEF on the 8an... some day if you step up the cubes you will know the fuel is their if you need it, might as well do it the first time instead of buying two dif sizes fuel line. i have tried about every kind of elec fuel pump made, i have had really good luck with the Aeromotive, but i my pick of the litter is Magnafuel these things are top notch, and like the other guys said if you will put the rubber isolators between the pump and what ever you mount it to --quiet as can be, but man get a pump with a return,, it runs from your pump over to your fuel cell,, keeps fuel moving and does not build up heat, the pump will last a lot longer, well just my 2 cents for what that is worth |

Any particular reason you are switching to electric?
Where are you mounting the cell? Off the top of my head you will need: regulator quality fuel line and fittings pre and post filter return line is probably a better idea for a street truck I recommend a shut-off valve before the pump.

I ran two mallory pumps a 250 on the motor and a 110 on the nitrous. They worked great but I'm swapping to a Magnafuel 500 to lose some weight and some plumbing.

well i figured i would go ahead and swith to electric now while its easy to do w/ the body off and all. plus next year i plan on punching the motor out to a 383. the new fuel cell will be mounted in between the frame rails under the bed. the cell comes w/ -8 inlet/outlet fittings so i guess i will need all -8 fittings, lines, and cuplers to plumb it up correct? by shut off valve do you mean manual or some kind of safety/ electric.

Just some food for thought, but a good mechanical pump will handle a typical 383.
Most electric pumps are pushers and the manufacture will recommend you mount it below the cell so the fuel is gravity fed from the cell. I recommended a manual shut off if you need to work on the fuel line, but if the cell is below the plumbing then you done really need one.

another question here too while we're on fuel pumps...
Is there a rough estimate on when you should forego a mechanical pump and use an electric one? I agree with planning ahead for future upgrades (like using -8AN fuel line), but as far as the pump itself goes, when is a mechanical pump out of the question?

and don't forget....
Wire it right, use relays, proper gauge wire, and fuses. Soldering and heat shrink are a good thing!!! do not hot wire to a 20amp toggle switch (although, some people like fires) i have a magnafuel 500, couldn't tell ya how it works or sounds, i never put fuel into yet... (this winter some time) |

Really anything with a motor needs a relay. Electric Fan, Electric water pump, Electric fuel pump
