CPP modular spindles

Well it seems that the CPP "bug" may have bitten me.

I was going to install my new CPP modular drop spindles. I set them on the ball joint, and they're clearly not the right size. Both the upper and lower holes in the spindles are too large. I guess I'll be calling CPP tomorrow to remedy the situation (hopefully).

I'm guessing they sent me a set for a different year.

Additionally, the LS1 camaro brake calipers simply won't work with the stock size rotor Now I have to find another set of calipers....grrrr

I'd be hesitant to blame them right off the bat. I'm curious as to what ball joints they require?

What year(s) are your ball joints for?

My ball joints are for a 72. I removed the ECE drop spindles that work fine to install these. When they didn't fit, I measure the opening, and the CPP holes are clearly larger.

I will watch this too, I know they make them for different year ball joints, I wonder which ones they sent you. I dont know which are larger from year to year.

Well, I'm pretty sure the 63-70 ball joint holes are larger than the 71-72 units. They may have sent you the 63-70 disc conversion spindles instead of 71-72. Hopefully they're not just made wrong.

OK, so I called CPP and they're sending me new spindles.

Initially they wanted to not pay for me to ship back the incorrect spindles (even though they messed up), but I was able to convince them to pay for it (~$45ish for shipping).

They were trying to tell me that it was past the 30 day return policy (sorry my truck was at the paint shop for 4 extra months!!!!)

Oh well, looks like they'll make it right.

63-70 ball joints are smaller than the 71-72's been there and done that, so they sent you a spindle for who knows what?!

Sounds like they sent you the 73-87 HD spindles. What did you do with the ECE spindles?

, Looks like you beat me to it. I'm getting ready to buy some from Stan at ECE. I really needed the ones from a 73-87 anyway since that's what I've already bought the bushings and ball joints for...... Are you going to put these on Tubby? I didn't think you could get it any lower????

Sorry I didn't post on this one before....I just now saw it. I ran into the exact same deal on my old 72' with the CPP spindles. They use the 73-87 ball joint with them. In my situation I was planning to change the ball joints while I was there anyway, so it all worked out. It's not a bad thing though, the 73+ ball joints are a little tougher, and the major bonus was that I found they were close to half price of what the 71-72 were.

Acording to the information on the Modular Drop Spindles, no modifications are required, hence why they're listed specifically for 71-72.

Maybe their older regular drop spindles require ball joint changes. I bought and replaced my ball joints when I put my chasis together and really don't want to change them out since they have 0 miles on them.

i bought a set for a 70 chevy truck. i didnt have any problems with them fitting. i did however have problems with the calipers. i could not get them to quit leaking. i ended up going to autozone. then i had to call back and get the rest of the hardware. the sent it out without to much hassle.

Their calipers were over priced when I was looking at it. You're better off getting some reman'd and loaded ones from a parts store for less.

No, for the 64. ...Tubby already has 2.5" spindles but can/will be going lower

Yeah, it's been a while....I suppose they must have been just regular drop spindles then.

If that's the case though, what was their reason for yours being the wrong size....perhaps they sent you 73+ spindles? Are they sending you the right ones now or just refunding you?

I don't really know what they're for for sure, just that they're wrong.

A new set should be on there way, and they're supposed to be sending me a ups tag or something to ship back the wrong ones.

Well after about 3 weeks of waiting since I tried to install my first set of modular spindles I finally got the new ones installed:

Couple of comments:

First, as advertised these moved the wheels inboard which has solved my clearance issues



When I was installing them, I put on the brake rotor, and the passenger side rotor was hitting the spindles when I tightened down the spindle nut. Nothing a little grinding didn't take care of. I figured I'd have the same thing on the drivers side, but to my surprise I didn't....oh well.

Like I said before CPP sent UPS out to pickup the incorrect spindles (at their expense). I told them to go ahead and order me a set of spindles and then refund me my money when they get the wrong ones back. I figured they'd try to refund me only the cost of the original spindles, not the shipping. To my surprise they did me right, and refunded the shipping too.

Some how I also ended up gettting the brackets for mounting the stock calipers. I didn't order these, as I was planning on making my own, but I guess I'll use them since I have them.

So overall I'm pretty happy. The spindles achieved what I wanted and CPP treated me fairly after they sent me the wrong parts.

CPP seems like they are always having to correct their orders.

I wonder why they just can't get it right the first time?

I truely belive that CPP doesn't have one employee that owns/drives or has any knowledge of these trucks or their own products.

That's why I will continue to support ECE. These guys are truck guys.

I live locally to CPP. Their guys at the counter are VERY knowledgeable. Most people at the Brothers truck show use their stuff and have nothing but good things to say about them. I always read about mail order horror stories. That is not the case if you go there in person.
