HEI Distributer Conversion Wiring

I just put an HEI distributer in my grandfathers old '70 Chevy pickup that I own and was wondering what is the best (Simplest) way to wire it in correctly to the ignition switch. I think I read somewhere before that the stock wire isn't a heavy enough gage wire and a new one would need to ran. I temporarily ran a hot from the battery to make sure it would run with the new distributer. Now I want to wire it up correctly. Any help, link or a simple schematic would be appreciated.
Thanks, Roberty

You are right on the stock wires, clip them out, including the yellow one going to the starter.
Just run a wire to the IGN UNFUSED terminal on the fuse box.

Where can it safely be wiring if the fuse block is full?

In reality, I like to splice into the large pink wire behind the ignition switch. (that's how I have done 2 out of 3 of my trucks). However, I got flamed on here for sayig that last time.
You can also splice the old coil wire real close to the fire wall where the harness comes out, it is not reduced voltage there...but that looks like poo-poo.

Ok, I'm still a little confused, Longhornman. I need to run a wire from the IGN Unfused terminal to the distributer - Correct?
What do I need to do to the yellow one going to the starter? From where do I need to run the starter wire from?

Mr Beard, that wire basicly feeds everything that is controlled from the ignition switch.
Rob, The old points set up was wired 2 ways, the cloth covered reduced voltage wire ran the coil while the engine was running. The yellow wire going to your starter is only hot when you are cranking the engine over. This yellow wire sends a full 12 volts to the coil while cranking the engine over to help with a hotter spark, there for giving quicker start ups.
The HEI makes more power than the old points ever did (in stock form) and does not theed the yellow "boost" wire to assist in anything. The starter only needs the large battery cable, and the purple wire on the S terminal in order to operate.

I'M using the UN_FUSED contact that Andy talked about for my HEI and Electric choke ,used 12 gauge wire and placed a 5 amp fuse in line . Works great .

you can pull a factory HEI power wire out of a truck or car that has the correct connector and replace the existing wire in the harness end to end not cutting a thing just plug and play per say
the terminal at the firewall can be swapped pretty easy ? kinda hard to explain if you arent familiar with the connectors and how they come apart??
i've done this to alot of my trucks and friends as well.looks and works great!

Longhorn.

They way you described will work. I want to make you aware of the fact that if you remove the old resistor wire and run the correct gauge wire required for the HEI (I forget the gauge 12 sounds right) from where the Old resistor wire plug in you will have the required 12 volts. Just another way Kinda a clean stock looking conversion.

This post Love Tip not a I want to piss you off Post.

72MARIO, i have never seen anyone pull wires out of the block, only bulky crimp on fittings there, thats what I was saying looked like poo-poo.
