Re: what year pwr steering is on my truck?
need pictures...
most of the boxes from 70's thru 80's are near identical. They did change to metric threads and quick steer ratios at some point though.. But the boxes look the same on the outside.

Re: what year pwr steering is on my truck?
It's impossible to give an answer without a pic or two. All truck based power steering boxes from '71-'87 are identical in appearance on the outside. From '71 to about '81 they used an inverted flare style fitting for the hose connections. From about '81-'87 they used a metric fitting with an O-ring seal. There were also two different diameter/splines on the input shaft.

Re: what year pwr steering is on my truck?
The Saginaw 605 is a very common box used when converting these trucks to power steering. They are readily available at salvage yards, remanufactured or new from your favorite local auto parts stores.

Re: what year pwr steering is on my truck?
why do you need a new box? You know that you can rebuild them right? not for the faint of heart but very doable so i've seen. I picked up a kit from rockauot.com but haven't attempted it yet.

Re: what year pwr steering is on my truck?
The pic that Tony posted is of a 4X4, so that may be some of the difference you see. However the box itself is the same. One thing you can do to determine the aprox year of your steering box, is disconnect one of the lines on it and see what style of fitting it has. See my previous post for the style types.

Re: what year pwr steering is on my truck?
i think i've decided its around a 71 or so. i know you can rebuild them but i have heard from some guys at work (a gm dealer) that building those can be a pain, because something about the bearing on the inside and getting everything adjusted right. i just bought a reman today for a 71 and gonna see if it works

Re: what year pwr steering is on my truck?
on some the shaft coming out of the top of the box which mates into the rag joint are larger as mine was. I found that out when I replaced mine. Mine was from a 75 or 76 4 x 4 suburban. that difference may not be in a 2 whl dr. though.

Re: what year pwr steering is on my truck?
Here are a few more pictures of power steering conversions I have done on a few of my trucks. One is a 1/2 2wd, one is a 3/4 ton 2wd and one is a 1/2 ton 4x4. All of them utilized the GM Saginaw 605 box and the power steering conversion frame bracket kit.

Re: what year pwr steering is on my truck?
I need a power steering gear box for my 1962 k 10 and have bought a frame bracket kit from 456 truck and they say use a Saginaw 605 but I can not find one .
Will any 4x4 Chevy truck Blazer or Burb work? Any information would be appreciated. |

Re: what year pwr steering is on my truck?
Thanks 61 k10 for your quick reply. I found 2or 3 in a junk yard and was not sure if they would work. The maker of the support brackets said to use a Saginaw 605 and the only pictures that I have seen of a 605 did not have the 4 bolts and plate around the top of the gear box.
Once again thanks for the help. |
