Smile I've Got Gas

Swapping out my fuel tank and unfortunately have about a half-tank of gas in the old one. What is the best method for emptying the original tank before removing it? I've got rust in the tank so will have to filter it, but can approach that issue later.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Re: I've Got Gas

piece of garden hose and a jug... little siphon action will get you going.

or leave the cap on, pull the tank (heavy now) and dump it...

Re: I've Got Gas

You can drain it from under the cab. There's a short piece of rubber fuel line that goes from the tank to the hardline.

In terms of what to dispose of it in, most major cities have a haz mat retrieval program where they will give you 2 or 3 of those 5 gallon jugs. You fill them up and they come and pick them up. At least out here, that is how it works.

Re: I've Got Gas

Just removed about 16 gallons from mine.

Step 1: Add 3/8's hose to the line coming out of the tank were the sending unit is wired up. Use enough hose to go to a 5 gal. gas can.

Step 2: Turn your compressor down to about 40-50 psi and attach an air nozzle to it. Use a shop towel and ball it up into the fuel fill along with the end of the air nozzle.

Step 3: Add compressed air and watch the jug fill up.

It's the quickest and best non-tasting way I found.

You just took 16 gallons out of it? So in other words, it was full?? Why didn't you drive it until it was on fumes, then drain it?

After just buying the truck the truck I filled it up on the way home and started sorting out a few problems (minor ones). One of the problems was it pinged pretty bad so after going though all the checks I happened to put a clear fuel filter on and noticed when I started it up again the fuel was orange with rust chips. Tank looked almost new on the outside but the inside was another story.

Re: I've Got Gas

I rigged up an in line fuel pump with some fuel line and a battery. I put the old gas in a jeep can and use it up on my ranch truck. It does not run very good but I never have to buy gas for it. If the gas is really bad, it goes in to my New Years bon fire.

Re: I've Got Gas

You can siphon by using some extra length hose, pushing it into the tank most of the way, covering the end with a thumb and then pulling it out part way.

that's not a straight drain though, it goes up to the top and in through the sending unit... Combine that with the air compressor method sounds like a good plan.
