Drum Brake Help!

I am trying to get the drums off of my 71 rearend. How do you back the brake pads off? I am using a haynes manual and a chilton with no luck. I have a oval shaped hole in the backing plate. The haynes manual says to knock out a plug on the front of the drum to adjust. But I am not having any luck knocking it out. Ive got the drum soaking in pb blaster as I type this.
Any tips to get me in going in the right direction!?

Re: Drum Brake Help!

If you have a slot on the backing plate, then you can back off the adjusters from there. The last few I had to get off were binding on the hub. I just took a propane/mapp gas torch and heated the drum. It expanded enough to either tap off with a hammer or just yank off (using gloves of course).

Edit: Plus I usually use 2 screwdrivers when backing off the adjusters. 1 to hold the self adjuster bar away and the other to turn the opposite direction from how the bar makes it ratchet.
