Taillights - 1156 or 1157???

Instead of getting those awesome LED's, I want my Blue dots to be as bright as they can be, using bulbs. Are our tailight bulbs 1156's or 1157's? And, does anyone know of a manufacturer that produces a high power, 50 watt?, bulb?

I've seen replacement 1157 bulbs that are halogen.

A 1156 is a single filament bulb. A 1157 is a dual filament bulb. A 2057 is brighter than a 1157. There is one that is brighter than that, but I cannot rembember the part # at this time.. .

Per Phillips lighting specs.....The #1157 lamp is rated @ 32/3 candle power and the # 2057 is rated @ 32/2 candle power....The brake lamp brightness would be the same but the #2057 tail lamp brightness would be 1/3 less than the 1157

looking further thru the lighting specs; the #2357 has the same C-6 base design and is rated @ 40/3 candlepower; so.... this lamp would be considerably brighter brake lite.

and DevinM.... seems like I have seen 50 watt replacements for the 1157 in the JC Whitney catalog.
70c10..... I thot that 'blue dots' were illegal... at least in some areas ????/

Blue dots are only illegal if you get pulled over.
I know I normally am the first to point out the legality of somethings, but I do put some "off road/show use only" items on my truck.
I just carry a spare set of lenses with me for if i get stopped.

so the #2357 will work on both back up and brake light applications.????... .. do you have to worry about blowing a fuse with a stronger bulb ???

#2357 will draw 2.23 amps ( brake & turn lite) and .59 amps ( tail lite );;;;;;;;;;;;;;; #1157 will draw 2.10 amps (brake and turn lite) and .59 amps ( tail lite )...... So..... the #2357 only draws .13 amp difference from the # 1157 . No need to worry about blowing fuses......

There are a couple of Police motorcycles here in Vegas with blue dots. They don't bother anyone here.

I have blue dots...but stock bulbs....

The 50 watt bulb that should interchange with the 1157 is a 795. You can get these from Galls....they used to be the standard in the police car lightbars....

They are bright....I am not sure if they wouldn't be too bright for a taillight.....now a backup is a different story....

Here in Ohio, blue dots are illegal on cars and trucks, but bikes are aloud to have them.
The one time I got pulled over for them I told the officer I had some old nastly lenses in the bed, (which i did) and he gave me a warning since I did an on the spot correction.

2357 are an upgrade many bikers use the only drawback is they don't last as long as the 1157 .
There is also a H1157 but it put out a lot of heat and draws about twice the amps.

The #795 is a single contact lamp; the #1157 is a dual contact lamp.... so they would not be interchangable...

The #2357 has rated average life of 400 hrs ( brake lite) and 5000+ hours ( tail lite).

The #1157 has rated average life of 1200 hrs (brake lite) and 5000+ hours (tail lite)

This information is from the Philips Lighting Specs....As I recall; I went to their web site and printed out pages 113 thru 128 of their specs. Also, Wagner and Sylvania have similar information...You might want to check with your favorite auto/truck parts store; they just might have a speck sheaat catalog they would give you !!!!! Jim

Thanks guys! I went with the JC Whitney purchase. I also bought the high power reverse lights. Even though, my reverse lights don't go on when I have the truck in reverse, but that's another bridge to cross when I get to it....
