What do these numbers mean?
There are numbers stamped into the cowl area on the drivers side of my 68! The numbers are 22 292? I have never seen anything like them. It's like they are stamped into the metal. Anyone have an idea what these are or what they mean?

Re: What do these numbers mean?
I really can't remember. The 6 got pulled when I was really young for a 400. It did have 4:10 gears from the factory tho

Re: What do these numbers mean?
Since it is stamped in, I would think it is the part number for that body panel

Re: What do these numbers mean?
Just looked at mine, it has a 5 and 691. It is a 68 also. It is right on the curve at the front ds of the cowl where it goes from horizontal to vertical. Looks to be hand stamped, under original paint.

Re: What do these numbers mean?
Tman and BigBlu -
Do either of you know which assembly plant your truck was built at? K

Re: What do these numbers mean?
J in the VIN = Janesville, correct? If so that is where it came from.

Re: What do these numbers mean?
Well....
I'm speculating here, but at many assembly plants the bodies are built in "CSN" order. The "CSN" is the carrier sequence number, and is a number assigned based on the specific carrier (underbody support/welding fixture) that was used to weld the body up. It serves two purposes - one is identify the specific body before the VIN is affixed (which usually doesn't happen until the first operation in the Trim area) and - two - allows engineering and assembly to track any build/assembly issues back to a specific carrier, for problem diagnosis and resolution. That could be what this number (or series of numbers) is but in Flint the small stamp was applied to the passenger side cowl rather than driver's side. I held off answering because I'm just guessing on this one. My $0.03 - K

Re: What do these numbers mean?
I made the mistake of looking at the spid for the assmebly plant, turns out the glove box door is from another truck. I checked the vin plate and it has a F in it, Flint? I was thinking that these numbers were some sort of tracking number, or possibly a quality control stamp. I had never noticed them on another truck, but I have never been this far into one before either.
PS by looking at where you work I would say your guess would be better that most!!! Last edited by Tman; 01-12-2010 at 02:06 PM. Reason: add comment |

Re: What do these numbers mean?
Yes - F is Flint.
Probably not a quality control feature, as we wouldn't "deface" the truck with a stamp for quality identification. Typically it would be either an inkstamp in the appropriate area of the truck or a stamp/punch on the repair/inspection ticket (which is not let out of the plant). K
